Partner Engineer

Austin, Texas, United States; New York, New York, United States; Remote (US); San Francisco, California, United States

About Thatch

For most people, health insurance is something that happens to them: a plan chosen by someone else, with little room to fit their life. Thatch is changing that. We help companies give every employee a real healthcare budget instead of a one-size-fits-all plan, so people can choose the coverage and care that works for them, and employers get predictable costs they can control.

It’s a simple idea, but making it real means solving hard problems across healthcare, payments, and technology, and we’re just getting started. We look for people who like solving complex problems, use good judgment, and are comfortable working through ambiguity. People here care deeply about our customers, take real responsibility for what gets built, and are driven by doing work that matters.

About the role

Thatch is reimagining how health benefits work. We help employers give their employees a healthcare budget to choose the coverage that works best for them, while making benefits easier to manage and costs more predictable for businesses.

We're looking for a Partner Engineer to own the reliability and success of our payroll and HRIS integrations as we scale. You'll work directly with customers, integration partners, and internal teams to solve complex technical challenges, validate new integrations, and keep critical connections running reliably.

This is a high-impact role with real ownership from day one. You'll play a key part in delivering a seamless experience for our customers while helping our engineering team stay focused on building what's next.

What you will do

  • Own integration health. Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve payroll and HRIS connection issues, ensuring integrations work reliably for our customers.
  • Lead technical validation. Partner directly with enterprise customers to test payroll integrations, identify potential issues, and ensure successful launches.
  • Be the technical expert. Help customers and internal teams navigate complex payroll configurations, integration capabilities, and API limitations.
  • Drive issues to resolution. Work across customers, external partners, and engineering to diagnose problems, remove blockers, and own outcomes.
  • Build scalable processes. Develop runbooks, monitoring practices, and workflows that improve reliability and reduce recurring issues.
  • Shape how we scale. Identify patterns and opportunities to improve our integrations, customer experience, and engineering efficiency

What we are looking for

  • 5+ years of experience in partner engineering, solutions engineering, technical integrations, or a similar customer-facing technical role.
  • Strong understanding of APIs, including the ability to read documentation, troubleshoot failures, and diagnose integration issues.
  • Experience owning complex technical problems across multiple systems, stakeholders, or external partners.
  • Confidence working directly with customers, translating technical complexity into clear guidance and solutions.
  • Strong ownership mindset, with the ability to independently prioritize issues and drive them through resolution.
  • Experience building repeatable processes, documentation, or monitoring practices to improve operational reliability.

Experience that stands out

  • Experience with payroll, HRIS, or benefits platforms, particularly complex enterprise configurations and integrations.
  • Experience working with third-party APIs and integration partners, such as Finch, Merge, or similar platforms.
  • Experience building internal tools, scripts, or automations to improve integration reliability and reduce manual work.
  • Experience in a forward-deployed engineering or technical solutions role, solving complex customer problems and translating them into scalable technical solutions.

What to expect

We aim to move quickly, and most candidates complete the process within 2–3 weeks. You can expect:

  • An initial conversation with a recruiter.
  • A conversation with the hiring manager to discuss your experience and approach to technical problem-solving.
  • A practical technical exercise and conversations with cross-functional partners.
  • A final conversation with company leadership.

Estimated Compensation Range

$160,000 - $195,000 USD
