Senior Power Electronics Engineer
About Wing:
Wing offers drone delivery as a safe, fast, and sustainable solution for last mile logistics. Consumer appetites for on-demand services are increasing, but current delivery methods are inefficient, costly, and contribute to road accidents and air pollution. Wing’s fleet of highly automated delivery drones can transport small packages directly from businesses to homes on-demand, in minutes. We design, build, and operate our aircraft, and offer drone delivery services on three continents. Our technology is designed to be easy to integrate into existing delivery and logistics networks, offering a scalable drone delivery solution for a broad range of businesses. Wing is a part of Google's parent company, Alphabet, and our mission is to create the preferred means of delivery for the planet. If you're ready to do the greatest work of your life, come join us.
About the Role:
Wing is looking for a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to join our Electrical and Embedded team. This role will be based in Palo Alto, CA. As a Senior Power Electronics Engineer, you will be part of our nimble design team that is tasked with building unmanned, autonomous delivery vehicles and their support systems. In this role, you will own the end-to-end product lifecycle - from product concept (board design and physical layout) all the way to product mass production. You will also use your solid hardware design skills coupled with your knowledge of system architecture and software considerations for embedded devices. You will own board design from concept to physical layout, and work cross-functionally on system integration.
What You’ll Do:
- Design, generate electrical schematics/layouts and bring-up circuit board assemblies for high-density power electronic converters (e.g., motor inverters/ESCs, DC/DC converters, battery chargers) from concept through to production
- Lead the evaluation, selection, and integration of battery cells, battery management systems (BMS), and overall battery pack designs
- Conduct rigorous testing and validation of power electronics, motors, and battery systems at the component, subsystem, and system levels
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including mechanical, embedded, GNC and systems engineers to ensure seamless integration and optimal aircraft performance
- Contribute to the selection of components, schematic capture, and PCB layout guidance for power circuits
- Investigate and resolve complex technical issues related to power electronics, motors, or batteries in existing and new designs
- Stay current with emerging technologies in power electronics, motor design, and battery technology
What You’ll Need:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering/Embedded/Computer Hardware Engineering or equivalent experience
- 8+ years of design experience in an electronics production environment, including experience with packaging, integration, cost reduction, sourcing and transitioning a product from engineering to manufacturing team
- Solid understanding of various motor types (especially BLDC motors) and their control techniques (e.g., FOC, sensorless control)
- Demonstrated experience in the evaluation, testing, and characterization of lithium-ion batteries and Battery Management Systems (BMS)
- Hands-on experience with lab equipment for testing and debugging power electronics, motors, and battery systems (e.g., oscilloscopes, power analyzers, dynamometers, battery cyclers)
- Applied experience with interface technologies: CAN, USB, I2C, RS232, and ethernet
- Experience with python for data collection, analysis, and automation tools
- Strong technical communication/presentation skills and attention to detail
