Simulation Engineering Intern, Summer 2027

Palo Alto, California

About Wing:

Wing offers drone delivery as a safe, fast, and sustainable solution for last mile logistics. Consumer appetites for on-demand services are increasing, but current delivery methods are inefficient, costly, and contribute to road accidents and air pollution. Wing’s fleet of highly automated delivery drones can transport small packages directly from businesses to homes on-demand, in minutes. We design, build, and operate our aircraft, and offer drone delivery services on two continents. Our technology is designed to be easy to integrate into existing delivery and logistics networks, offering a scalable drone delivery solution for a broad range of businesses. Wing is a part of Google's parent company, Alphabet, and our mission is to create the preferred means of delivery for the planet. If you're ready to do the greatest work of your life, come join us.

About the Program:

Join Wing's 12-week paid summer internship! This is a hybrid, in-person program based in Palo Alto, CA, with start dates in May or June. Eligible candidates must be a current student enrolled in a degree program and intend to return to the program after the completion of the summer internship.

About the Role:

Wing is looking for a Simulation Engineer Intern to join our Simulation & Evaluation Team based in Palo Alto, CA.

Our team develops tools that enable engineers to develop, test and deploy features efficiently and at scale. Our work spans vehicle physics and sensor modeling, large-scale simulation frameworks, test infrastructure for backend verification, integrated avionics and system testing, and foundational ML technologies such as world-modelling, 3D reconstruction and sim2real. Our team is dedicated to ensuring simulation is the fastest and most reliable way to test changes to our system and to enable safer and faster feature development.

The successful candidate is able to demonstrate adeptness at software development, system modeling and simulation, 3D geometry, and RL techniques. We are looking for individuals with strong written and verbal communication skills who thrive collaborating across multidisciplinary teams, spanning Simulation, Perception, and GNC, and who can tackle complex, open-ended engineering problems.

In this role you will:

  • Explore new and creative ways to use our wealth of real-world flight data to help validate our flight software.
  • Build closed-loop simulation environments using real flight telemetry to enable counterfactual rollouts and policy evaluation for RL-based flight autonomy
  • Leverage large-scale simulation and data pipelines to run critical experiments, draw actionable engineering insights, and contribute alongside a dedicated team committed to supporting your mentorship and growth.
  • Make a measurable impact on Wing's ability to scale our operations more rapidly, at the forefront of the rapidly growing drone delivery industry.

What You’ll Need:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Vision, Robotics, Electrical Engineering or related field, graduating between December 2027 and August 2028.
  • Strong examples of previous engineering experience from past internships and/or academic or extracurricular projects.
  • Strong grasp of dynamical systems, linear algebra, 3D geometry, and vision-based autonomy.
  • Experience with C++ and/or Python.
  • Experience with using some numerical or statistics library and environment (e.g. numpy, scipy, pandas, Matlab, R, etc.) to analyze real-world data (e.g. fitting models, simple ML approaches).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts across disciplines.

The US base salary range for this internship position is the salary range below + benefits. Wing’s salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your location during the hiring process.
