Policy Communications Lead

Palo Alto, California; Remote, USA

About Wing:

Wing offers drone delivery as a safe, fast, and sustainable solution for last mile logistics. Consumer appetites for on-demand services are increasing, but current delivery methods are inefficient, costly, and contribute to road accidents and air pollution. Wing’s fleet of highly automated delivery drones can transport small packages directly from businesses to homes on-demand, in minutes. We design, build, and operate our aircraft, and offer drone delivery services on two continents. Our technology is designed to be easy to integrate into existing delivery and logistics networks, offering a scalable drone delivery solution for a broad range of businesses. Wing is a part of Google's parent company, Alphabet, and our mission is to create the preferred means of delivery for the planet. If you're ready to do the greatest work of your life, come join us.

About the Role

Wing is looking for a Policy Communications Lead to join our Communications team. This role is hybrid based in Palo Alto, CA or based remotely in the United States. You'll set and execute the communications strategy for how Wing engages the people who decide whether and where we can operate: federal regulators, state and local officials, community groups, and the reporters who cover them.

As drone delivery scales, public attention on noise, privacy, safety, and oversight is rising, and rules are increasingly written city by city. This is a senior individual-contributor role with broad scope and real influence. You'll lead without direct reports, working with Government Affairs, Legal, Policy, Marketing, Operations, and our retail and logistics partners to build a record that communities and officials can verify.

What You'll Do

  • Own Wing's policy and regulatory communications strategy across federal, state, and local audiences
  • Advise senior leaders and executives on how Wing's public positioning affects permitting, legislation, and litigation
  • Partner with Government Affairs and Legal to align messaging on rulemakings, legislation, litigation, and permitting proceedings, and know when to escalate
  • Build the community-facing evidence base (noise, flight volume, operating hours, data and privacy practices) with Operations, and keep it accurate and current
  • Prepare executives and spokespeople for hearings, council meetings, and high-stakes media interviews
  • Lead issues and rapid-response communications when a market comes under scrutiny, including coordinating with partners on how Wing is described
  • Develop pre-launch and pre-permit outreach toolkits that market teams can use at scale
  • Monitor policy, media, and community sentiment, and translate it into clear risk assessments and recommendations for leadership
  • Manage agency and consultant relationships for policy and issues communications
  • Build a network of credible third-party voices, including host communities, partners, and outside experts

What You'll Need

  • 12+ years of experience in policy communications, public affairs, or issues management
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience scaling, operationalizing, or commercializing at a previous company
  • A track record of leading communications strategy for regulatory, legislative, or other high-scrutiny issues, not only executing it
  • Experience advising senior leaders and influencing cross-functional teams without formal authority
  • Experience working with reporters on policy-driven or contested stories
  • Ability to explain technical topics credibly without oversimplifying
  • Strong judgment under pressure, including making calls with incomplete information and escalating appropriately to Legal and leadership
