Senior Backend Software Engineer

Palo Alto, California

About Wing:

Wing offers drone delivery as a safe, fast, and sustainable solution for last mile logistics. Consumer appetites for on-demand services are increasing, but current delivery methods are inefficient, costly, and contribute to road accidents and air pollution. Wing’s fleet of highly automated delivery drones can transport small packages directly from businesses to homes on-demand, in minutes. We design, build, and operate our aircraft, and offer drone delivery services on two continents. Our technology is designed to be easy to integrate into existing delivery and logistics networks, offering a scalable drone delivery solution for a broad range of businesses. Wing is a part of Google's parent company, Alphabet, and our mission is to create the preferred means of delivery for the planet. If you're ready to do the greatest work of your life, come join us.

About the Role:

Wing is looking for a Backend Senior Software Engineer to join our Uncrewed Air Traffic Management (UTM) engineering team. This role will be based in Palo Alto, CA. You will directly contribute to building and scaling the systems that enable safe and efficient drone operations worldwide.

In UTM, our mission is to unlock airspace globally by building and shaping the future of regulatory compliant systems that scale with Wing operations. You'll develop critical regulatory and compliance software, shape drone industry shared infrastructure and ensure the reliability and scalability of our platform. You'll work on a diverse range of projects, from developing robust backend services for shared airspace operations and geospatial data ingestion to efficiently serving data to our UIs in the field.

This position seeks highly-motivated individuals who enjoy working in a highly dynamic and collaborative team environment. The successful candidate is able to identify areas in need of investment, set solution strategy, influence team direction, and have direct impact through their technical contributions, cutting through ambiguity, and designing and building complex systems. We’re looking for people who are intrinsically driven to collaborate on hard problems, drive simple solutions, and take pride in their team's work.

What You’ll Do:

  • Set solution and/or architectural strategy for yourself or a limited number of peers, cutting through ambiguity, and pre-empt complicating factors ahead of time.
  • Design and build solutions that utilize asynchronous pipelines, database systems, RPC handlers in collaboration with frontend engineers and other backend engineers, in a privacy and security conscious ecosystem.
  • Investigate and build software in areas with limited expertise and make an immediate impact.
  • Collaborate cross functionally with industry partners, product managers, and program managers to design, implement and quickly launch new features for partners and end consumers on time.
  • Mitigate, root cause and resolve urgent issues, in both familiar and unfamiliar software, as part of an on-call rotation, or other escalations.
  • Contribute to a team culture of support, engagement and quality, ensuring Wing can scale as a business.

What You’ll Need:

  • 8+ years of experience designing and developing backend software.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills and experience working in a collaborative team.
  • Ability to identify challenging problems and potential solutions with limited guidance, launch and successfully land the solution without any complications.
  • Experience developing backend systems involving database schema design, and synchronous/asynchronous systems.
  • Experience developing in C++, or ability to quickly pick up C++ with experience in similar languages like Java, or Go.
