Machine Tool Programmer

Specific Role:

The Machine Tool Programmer is responsible for creating and optimizing programs for laser and plasma cutting machines to support efficient, high-quality production. This role ensures all programs are accurate, up-to-date, and aligned with design specifications, material usage goals, and production timelines. The programmer works closely with production leads, engineering, and quality teams to support smooth machine operations, resolve issues, and improve overall workflow efficiency.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop and maintain accurate laser programs for machines based on customer drawings and job requirements
  • Support corrective actions and reprogramming needs for non-conforming parts
  • Collaborate with production and quality teams to validate programs and resolve technical issues on the shop floor
  • Optimize nesting layouts for material efficiency and reduced waste
  • Recommend improvements to programming processes and laser machine utilization

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree or certification in manufacturing, machining, or related field preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in CNC, laser, or plasma programming in a manufacturing environment
  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar nesting/programming software)
  • Strong understanding of blueprints, technical drawings, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
  • Experience with nesting optimization and material utilization strategies
  • Knowledge of different metals and material properties related to cutting processes
  • Ability to troubleshoot programming and machine-related issues effectively
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Basic computer skills, including experience with ERP/MRP systems preferred

Physical and Safety Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50–75 lbs if needed
  • Stand, walk and move for an entire shift
  • Always use applicable PPE
  • Follow safety protocols when using tools and handling materials
