We’re a high-growth technology company with top-rated products, including the leading home energy monitor and a top-selling EV charger. As we expand beyond our early adopters to a broader consumer base, we need a passionate Sustaining Electrical Engineer to help us troubleshoot and improve the Emporia Energy hardware ecosystem.

 

Role Overview

The ideal candidate will show strong ownership of engineering investigations of field returned units.  As a member of the team they will be expected to work closely and cross disciplinarily with design engineers to understand existing products so they can properly investigate them.  Throughout, they will demonstrate the strong analysis and test skills required to investigate hardware and bring investigations to root cause. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Help develop procedures for the engineering investigation of field return units, including when the triage team needs to stop forwarding failures for known issues that have been solved 
  • Perform detailed investigations of field failures in the 3rd tier investigation (1st tier being direct customer support, 2nd tier is triage to sort the failures and refurbish when possible, 3rd tier is engineering investigation to find root cause, within the R&D group). 

  • Make electrical design changes in Altium for minor improvements to existing products including obsolete parts and to correct weaknesses discovered through failure analysis activities 

  • Present findings to triage, design engineers and managers about failure analysis activities and recommend mitigations for failures 

  • Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers as needed 

  • Work closely with a team of passionate engineers to ensure we develop exceptional hardware products – participate and/or lead design reviews and trades as needed, or lend a hand with testing and debug of new products in development as required.  We are a small team requiring a high level of collaboration and teamwork to ensure we achieve our goals 

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • 5+ years of experience testing complex products as an electrical engineer, or related role 

  • BS in electrical engineering or related field 

  • Strong foundation of expertise in the testing and analysis of analog, digital, and mixed signal electrical systems 

  • Familiarity with both AC and DC power system basics, including an understanding of switching converters, inverters, and AC power distribution 

  • Familiarity with basic electrical lab equipment – hands on testing required 

  • Experience with schematic and layout in at least one industry standard tool, preferably with Altium Designer 

  • Some knowledge of renewable energy related concepts such as lithium ion batteries, solar arrays, general power conversion/regulation/distribution, and power fault protection 

  • Demonstrated experience managing workload and deliverables 

  • Strong writing, interpersonal, and communication skills 

Desired Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience designing and owning PCBA designs 

  • Experience testing and debugging Level 2, EV chargers 

  • Experience testing and debugging equipment with electrical and safety compliance standards such as FCC, CE, UL/ETL, etc. 

  • Experience testing high-volume consumer products 

  • Very experienced with Altium Designer 

  • Ability to automate lab instruments
