Position Summary
The Director, Sales Compensation Design & Operations owns the governance, financial integrity, and operational execution of sales compensation across a complex, high-growth, and regulated environment. This role ensures every incentive drives the right behavior, every payment is accurate and auditable, and every dollar of commission expense is forecasted, modeled, and controlled.
The Director operates as a critical partner to Sales and Finance, aligning compensation with revenue objectives, financial planning cycles, and operational capacity. Leveraging artificial intelligence, this leader automates validation, enhances forecasting accuracy, and enables predictive insights that inform executive decision-making.
Success in this role requires balancing speed with control, growth with compliance, and incentives with real-world execution constraints. This leader will build a scalable, trusted compensation engine that strengthens financial visibility, eliminates risk, and enables leadership to confidently manage performance, cost, and growth.
Responsibilities
Governance, Audit, and Risk Control
- Own end-to-end accountability for commission accuracy through structured validation frameworks, multi-system reconciliation, and audit-ready processes.
- Design and implement audit architecture that validates calculations, data integrity, and process adherence while proactively identifying and mitigating risks.
- Establish governance controls, approval workflows, and change management protocols to protect compensation integrity while enabling business agility.
Compensation Operations and System Architecture
- Own the design and performance of compensation systems and tools, ensuring scalability, accuracy, and seamless integration across CRM, ERP, HR, and financial platforms.
- Ensure data synchronization through validation checkpoints and reconciliation processes that maintain a single source of truth.
- Engineer scalable, automated workflows that reduce manual effort, improve cycle times, and support organizational growth.
Financial Modeling and Strategic Partnership
- Own commission expense modeling, including forecasting, accruals, budgeting alignment, and scenario planning.
- Partner with Sales FP&A to align compensation assumptions with revenue forecasts and financial plans.
- Provide executive-level insights that quantify tradeoffs between growth, cost, and operational capacity.
Compensation Design and Strategic Evolution
- Continuously evaluate compensation plans to ensure alignment with business strategy, financial constraints, and operational realities.
- Support future redesign cycles using performance data, financial modeling, and stakeholder alignment.
- Ensure incentive structures align with operational capacity and drive sustainable performance outcomes.
Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Analytics
- Deploy AI-driven validation tools to detect anomalies, reduce errors, and ensure payout accuracy.
- Build predictive models that forecast commission expense, performance outcomes, and behavioral responses.
- Leverage advanced analytics to generate actionable insights that improve forecasting and governance.
Knowledge and Skills
- Deep expertise in sales compensation governance, operations, and financial modeling.
- Advanced analytical capabilities with the ability to translate complex compensation structures into clear insights.
- Strong understanding of data integration across CRM, ERP, HRIS, and financial systems.
- Experience leveraging AI and advanced analytics to automate processes and improve decision-making.
Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Analytics, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in sales compensation, sales operations, or related roles.
- 5+ years of experience in FP&A, financial modeling, or commission expense forecasting.
- Proven experience leading compensation governance, audit, and operations in complex environments.
- Experience with compensation management platforms (e.g., Xactly) strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated success partnering with Sales, Finance, and executive leadership.
- Experience building teams, implementing scalable systems, and driving operational transformation.
