Position Summary:
The Director, Accounting is responsible for architecting, scaling, and defending Empower’s accounting and financial control environment during a period of rapid growth and regulatory complexity. This role owns the integrity, speed, and resilience of financial reporting while transforming accounting into a technology-enabled, insight-driven function. The Director leads enterprise close operations, GAAP compliance, inventory and cost accounting, and internal controls across a highly regulated 503A and 503B manufacturing environment. A core mandate is the strategic use of artificial intelligence to automate reconciliations, detect risk, and elevate decision quality. This leader builds a high-performance accounting organization from the ground up, develops future leaders, and ensures systems scale ahead of growth. Success means zero-surprise closes, audit- and regulator-ready operations, trusted financial insight for executives, and an accounting function that accelerates Empower’s mission without compromising precision, compliance, or patient safety.
Responsibilities:
Enterprise Financial Reporting and Close Ownership
- Own monthly, quarterly, and annual close as a scalable operating system.
- Ensure GAAP-compliant, regulator-ready financial statements at all times.
- Eliminate close risk through disciplined timelines, controls, and accountability.
Scalable Accounting Infrastructure and Controls
- Design end-to-end accounting processes engineered for hyper-growth.
- Embed internal controls directly into systems and transaction flows.
- Own inventory, work-in-process (WIP), batch costing, and valuation accuracy.
Uses Artificial Intelligence to Transform the Business
- Deploy AI to automate reconciliations, variance analysis, and close workflows.
- Implement predictive analytics for continuous risk and anomaly detection.
- Translate accounting data into forward-looking insights for leadership.
Building and Transforming the Team From the Ground Up
- Design and implement a future-state accounting organization.
- Recruit, develop, and retain top-tier accounting talent.
- Build leadership bench strength and succession depth.
Strategic Business and Regulatory Partnership
- Partner with executives on financial and regulatory implications.
- Align accounting with Operations, IT, Tax, and Compliance.
- Enable growth initiatives through scalable, compliant structures.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Deep GAAP expertise applied in regulated, high-volume manufacturing environments with complex inventory, costing, and compliance requirements.
- Proven ownership of ERP architecture, implementation, and optimization at enterprise scale.
- Demonstrated use of AI, automation, and analytics to improve control, speed, and insight.
- Strong executive communication skills with the ability to translate technical accounting into actionable business decisions.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Minimum of 7 years of technical accounting experience, including 5+ years leading accounting organizations in high-growth, multi-entity environments.
- Proven experience operating in regulated industries such as healthcare, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, or FDA-adjacent manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated ownership of enterprise-scale accounting operations, including close, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit readiness under growth pressure.
- Direct experience with inventory, WIP, batch costing, valuation, and variance analysis in complex manufacturing or distribution settings.
- Experience leading or co-owning ERP architecture, implementation, or major transformation with accountability for outcomes, data integrity, and adoption.
- Track record of using automation, advanced analytics, and AI-enabled tools to improve close speed, control effectiveness, and decision insight.
- Experience building organizations from the ground up, including organizational design, hiring, talent development, and succession planning.
- Exceptional ability to partner with executives, translating technical accounting and regulatory complexity into clear business decisions.
- Active CPA required; Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field strongly preferred.
