We are seeking a Senior Scientist to join our team working directly with the Director of R&D and focusing on Product Development. The Senior Scientist in R&D needs to be agile, professional, and comfortable in a rapidly changing environment. Key Responsibilities

Including, but not limited to:

  • Pilot and execute research of new carbon-based building materials for TAF Carbon to deliver validated prototypes and experimental data aligned with R&D milestones
  • Design and execute development plans to take research leads through manufacturing to deliver new commercial products
  • The Senior Scientist or Engineer will drive the full product development cycle (concept → scale-up → manufacturing) contributing with their experience and proactively learning where experience is limited
  • Build capabilities, executing the R&D roadmap, by developing new experimental workflows, introducing analytical and processing equipment, and implementing automation
  • Work closely with engineering and manufacturing partners in cooperation with company leadership to achieve product scale-up and manufacturing goals
  • Interface closely with research partners and intellectual property counsel to protect product innovations
  • Focus on hands-on material testing, technical problem solving, data collection and analysis
  • Supervise and collaborate with junior colleagues
  • Proactivity and accountability in solving problems and inefficiencies when they appear
  • Work closely with the R&D Director and bench scientists to continuously learn and improve our materials and ways of working
  • Generate clear technical documentation, experimental reports, and presentations to communicate results internally and to cross-functional partners

Skills & Requirements

Education / Experience

  • PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or Materials Science or Material Engineering
  • 4+ years of R&D or manufacturing industry experience, or Postdoc in materials research

Specific Skills / Abilities

We are looking for a broad spectrum of skills that we will complete over time. This role does not require you to have all the skills below; they are ordered from must-have to nice-to-have.

  • Scientific problem solving at the molecular level with a focus on graphitic materials or cellular solids and foams or composite materials, or related systems
  • Scientific rigor with a focus on quality over quantity and attention to details are musts
  • Strong hands-on lab skills and problem solving and safe lab set-up and chemical handling experience
  • NMR, GC, LC, SEM, XRD, TGA, DSC, Raman/IR or other materials analytical techniques
  • Skills in Statistical Process Control, Six Sigma or other process development tools
  • A knowledge of polyurethane or other foams manufacturing processes is a great plus
  • Design of experiments such as DoE or Bayesian Optimization and modern data analysis with Machine Learning and other AI approaches is a plus (JMP, Minitab, Python...)
  • Implementation knowledge and use of lab automation is a plus, added plus if self-driving lab experience
  • Furnace safety and set-up, atmosphere control with multiple gasses or CVD experience
  • Project management experience in Gantt or Agile or other methods

This is the expected annual base salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary based on factors, such as skill, experience, and qualification for the role.

$100,000 - $120,000 USD
