Data Scientist II (Remote - US)

We are currently seeking a full-time Data Scientist II to join our Policy and Ratings team. Our Policy & Ratings Team supports the development of building codes, appliance standards, and other policies. The Data Scientist II will also be part of the data team supporting California’s flagship TECH Clean California program, which makes it easier for households to gain access to the benefits of electric heat pumps for space and water heating. In this role, you will work with closely with a team of data scientists, research analysts, and technical project managers and will collaborate with policy analysts, engineers, economists, and program managers. You will have a broad impact on state, national, and international energy markets through our work for major utilities, local and state governments, non-governmental organizations, and other national leaders in energy efficiency and clean energy policy. The Data Scientist II in this role will support the application of mathematical models, statistics, data visualization, and data engineering to answer important questions. Examples of such questions include, “What would be the energy, environmental, economic, and health impacts of this proposed regulation?” “How can we predict which households will be most likely to switch to electric equipment?” “How much more expensive are heat pump clothes dryers when you control for confounding variables?” “What percentage of program rebates have gone to households living in Disadvantaged Community census tracts?” Modeling will include statistical analysis as well as bottom-up, stock-rollover models rooted in principles of economic and engineering analysis.
As with all consultants at Energy Solutions, the Data Scientist II will work on an evolving portfolio of different projects, including some multi-year projects and some shorter-term projects. A typical week consists of a mixture of team meetings, working sessions with other team members, asynchronous collaboration, and individual contributor work.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Develop, maintain, run, and own robust analytical models and dashboards for internal and external clients
- Translate quantitative data into reports and presentations for non-technical audiences, clearly communicating your analysis of the data
- Own the quality and accuracy of data analyses, work with data engineers and other team members to develop quality assurance systems and flag data errors
- Build ETL pipelines in collaboration with other data scientists and project managers
- Work with regular expressions and/or machine learning models on fuzzy string matching (matching model numbers between sales data and qualified product lists)
- Mentor and provide guidance to other members of the data analysis/engineering team
- Communicate and collect information from other staff, subcontractors, and clients
Minimum qualifications:
- A minimum of 5 years of work experience
- Strong critical thinking and evidence-based reasoning skills
- Proven professional experience developing analytical dashboards using BI tools, preferably Tableau
- A minimum of 3 years of experience using Python
- Experience building analytical models using a high-level programming language
- Knowledgeable about the applicability and limitations of metrics commonly used in descriptive and inferential statistics
- Capable of working independently and working effectively with technical as well as non-technical project managers
- Able to navigate multiple interrelated projects
- Adept at communicating technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- A technical test will be required during the interview process
Preferred qualifications:
- Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Operations Research, Engineering, a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience preferred
- Strong communication and presentation skills
- Proficiency with Tableau
- Knowledge of basic data warehousing principles
- Proficiency with SQL or other database querying language, at least a year of SQL experience
- Experienced with selecting and implementing regression and classification techniques where appropriate
- Domain knowledge on topics such as: economics, engineering, public policy, regulations, building codes, building science, incentive programs, demand-side management programs, energy efficiency, distributed energy resources, electrification, space and water heating, and energy equity
- Enthusiastic about combating climate change, learning new data science skills, and learning about topics related to clean energy and policy
- Team player who thrives in collaborative environments
- Cultural humility, empathy, and strong listening skills
Compensation to commensurate with experience with the pay band of is $110k - $135/Annually
