Vancouver, BC
LAPORTE is seeking an Industrial Mechanical Engineer, P.Eng, specializing in process and piping systems, with 5 to 10 years of experience in industrial systems design. This hybrid position is available in the following Canadian office locations: Vancouver (BC), Calgary (AB), Edmonton (AB), Lethbridge (AB), or Saskatoon (SK). Reporting to the Mechanical Discipline Lead, our Industrial Mechanical Engineer will lead the design and execution of industrial mechanical and piping projects in the agri-food, pharmaceutical, and industrial facilities sectors.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Design balance of plant mechanical systems for industrial facilities, including agrifood processing, pharmaceutical, and industrial sectors;
- Lead the design, modification, and development of P&IDs, piping and isometrics, mechanical drawings, and piping general arrangement drawings;
- Develop piping isometrics, MTOs, pipe support details, and layouts;
- Participate in defining client needs and project scope;
- Lead all project phases, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, timelines, and budgets;
- Develop conceptual, preliminary, and detailed designs, drawings, and specifications;
- Review engineering deliverables, maintain high-quality standards, and define project risks;
- Conduct work in accordance with Laporte's Professional Practice Management Plan and guidelines;
- Write technical reports and analyses to support design submissions;
- Review shop drawings for compliance and participate in the development of engineering standards;
- Obtain proposals from suppliers and contractors, and follow up as needed;
- Visit and survey project sites for project-related activities;
- Manage project deliverables and execution (estimated 50% of workload);
- Conduct process, utilities, and mechanical designs (estimated 50% of workload);
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary design teams across North America;
- Chair project team meetings and support project coordination efforts;
- Maintain a detailed understanding of local codes and standards applicable to industry projects;
- Maintain a reference set of standards and in-house best practices;
- Champion initiatives for process improvement and operational efficiency;
- Foster positive client and consultant interactions;
- Pursue business development opportunities to support future organizational growth.
Key Requirements:
- Current P.Eng registration in BC, AB, and/or SK;
- BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering;
- 5 to 10 years of experience in process and mechanical engineering for industrial, food and beverage, or pharmaceutical facilities;
- Knowledge of ASME Code Piping/Pressure Vessels and Material Handling standards;
- Familiarity with other relevant industry codes and regulations;
- Ability to travel to client sites in Canada and the USA;
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing and food safety (an asset).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Provincial (P.Eng) or State (PE) designation or eligibility;
- Strong leadership, relationship management, and organizational skills;
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements;
- Ability to exercise independent judgment in engineering methods and evaluation criteria;
- Experience in post-implementation continuous improvement efforts;
- Ability to influence clients, suppliers, and peers toward adopting best practices in engineering;
- Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, listening, and interpersonal);
- Ability to energize and engage team members to achieve top performance;
- Versatility across multiple engineering disciplines;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, Revit, and Plant 3D;
- Flexibility to travel to manufacturing sites as needed.
