Meals on Wheels West is seeking a dynamic, visionary, and compassionate executive director to lead our organization in its mission to deliver nutritious means and human connection to the most vulnerable members of our community.
ABOUT MEALS ON WHEELS WEST
Meals on Wheels West (MOW West) is a federally recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit agency whose mission is to provide community-based services that nourish and enrich the lives of our homebound neighbors of all ages. They proudly serve underserved populations of veterans, transitional care hospital patients, people living with physical or mental disabilities and formerly unhoused people. By providing nutritious meals, wellness checks and a friendly calling program that provides referrals to additional social services, the community served by MOW West is able to gain independence and improve their overall quality of life.
MOW West was established in 1974 by the Westside Ecumenical Council to serve seniors in the Santa Monica area. As their mission of Delivering More Than a Meal has grown over the past 51 years, the organization has expanded their reach to include Venice, Pacific Palisades, Marina Del Rey, Mar Vista/Del Rey and Malibu.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Reporting exclusively to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Meals on Wheels West’s staff, programs, growth, and fundraising. Candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, and fundraising experience with an emphasis on interacting with media, community involvement, and political interface. With an annual budget of $1.25 million and a dedicated team of 8 full time employees, this leadership role will execute and enhance the organization’s mission and values through developing a deep knowledge of core programs, operations, and business plans.
ROLES & RESPONSIBLITIES
Organizational Leadership
- Ensure ongoing local program success through program evaluation and consistent excellence in finance, administration, fundraising, communications, and systems. Experience in creating and implementing timelines and directing the team to resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.
- Actively engage and energize staff, volunteers, funders, and partnering organizations including governmental entities.
- Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors, serve as ex-officio of each committee, seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for ongoing local operations, and engage on regional and national levels.
- Lead, coach, develop, and retain MOW West staff.
Communications & Program Development
- Ensure effective systems to track progress and regularly evaluate program components to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, media and other stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors to complete the strategic business planning process for program growth.
- Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from social media to external relations with the goal of creating a strong brand.
- Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities.
- Develop and manage communication strategies that communicate the value and relevance of MOW West to diverse populations to enhance stakeholder retention, recruitment, and overall engagement.
Fundraising & Partnership Development:
- Expand local revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and expansion while simultaneously building reserves.
- Manage and grow key revenue sources including donor cultivation, grant writing, giving campaigns and events.
- Expand partnerships, establish relationships with existing funders, and political and community leaders.
- Have an external local, regional and national presence that communicates program results with an emphasis on the successes of the local program as a model for regional and national replication.
- Act as a community-facing leader who promotes engagement with civic, political, and community stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in the nonprofit sector.
- Track record of effectively leading and regionally scaling a performance- and outcome-based organization and staff.
- Proven ability developing and operationalizing strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.
- Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.
- Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
- Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
- Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills that can successfully advocate for the organization.
- Entrepreneurial, action-oriented, nimble and innovative approach to business planning.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse groups and organizations.
- Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.
- A deep passion for the mission of Meals on Wheels West.
SALARY & BENEFITS
This is a full-time in-person position located in Santa Monica, CA. Salary Range is $125,000-160,000 with a generous benefits package.
