ABOUT INDEPENDENT LIVING CENTER OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
Independent Living Center of Southern California (ILCSC) is a non-residential agency providing a wide range of services to a growing population of People with Disabilities, including Youth, Older Adults, and Veterans. We work with people of all ages with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Stroke, Cancer, Autism, Visual Impairments, Arthritis, Loss of Hearing, Mental Illness, and Physical Impairments. Through a partnership with the Los Angeles County ADRC, 211, and a network of 5 other Independent Living Centers, we offer the ‘No Wrong Door’ program, which promotes consistency in the delivery of services. Warm transfers are offered to support consumer navigation through pathways in urgent situations.

POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive of ILCSC, a mission-driven organization with a staff of approximately 25 and an annual operating budget of approximately $2 million. The ED is responsible for setting organizational strategy, leading and supporting staff, and strengthening partnerships that advance ILCSC’s services, advocacy, and community presence.
ILCSC seeks a collaborative and relationship-oriented leader with strong operational acumen and communication skills. The ED will foster an inclusive and supportive organizational culture by clarifying roles, strengthening internal systems, and implementing consistent processes that promote accountability, efficiency, and staff development.
As ILCSC’s primary ambassador, the Executive Director will build visibility and credibility with community, government, and funding partners, while leading fundraising efforts and expanding relationships with new and existing funders to support long-term sustainability. Working closely with the Board, staff, and stakeholders, the ED will guide strategic planning, ensure organizational alignment, and lead ILCSC into its next phase of impact as it approaches its 50th anniversary.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Organizational Leadership & Strategy
- Supervise the management and leadership of the organization, including operations, programming, advocacy, fundraising, and finances.
- Develop and maintain positive, effective Board relationships; provide timely and appropriate information to the Board and committees and educate the Board on external issues affecting the organization and its work.
- Work with the Board and senior leadership team to create and implement a strategic plan aligned with ILCSC’s mission, vision, and core values.
- Oversee high-quality, responsive services that meet the needs of individuals with disabilities and advance ILCSC’s mission.
- Strengthen program coordination, consistency across offices, and thoughtful innovation to improve service delivery and outcomes.
Staff Leadership & Operational Efficiency
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and high-trust organizational culture by supporting professional development, implementing fair evaluation and compensation practices, and prioritizing staff well-being and engagement.
- Maintain a consistent leadership presence and clear decision-making while promoting open communication to build trust, improve coordination across locations, and ensure timely responsiveness to staff and organizational needs.
- Strengthen and empower the leadership team through effective delegation, accountability, and coaching to support operational continuity, strong internal communication, and sustained organizational performance.
- Improve operational efficiency, compliance, and accountability by establishing clear processes, role clarity, and performance expectations across all offices.
Financial Management & Fund Development
- Establish a financial strategy that ensures sustainability, healthy cash flow, and adequate reserves.
- Oversee contractual agreements with service providers e.g. HR consultants, IT consultants, Insurance Broker, Vendors, to ensure the best quality and pricing available.
- Set annual fundraising goals and oversee organizational fundraising efforts, including grants, major gifts, and fundraising events.
- Cultivate strong relationships with established funding partners and actively engage new individual, corporate, and foundation donors.
Community Engagement
- Serve as the primary spokesperson for ILCSC.
- Increase awareness and integration of ILCSC within the surrounding community by overseeing effective marketing and communications activities.
- Act as an advocate in both public and private sectors for services and constituencies relevant to ILCSC.
- Engage participants, families, volunteers, donors, and community members to strengthen services and foster community involvement.
- Work with legislators, regulatory agencies, and volunteers to advance policies that increase funding and improve the quality of life for ILCSC’s participants.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior experience as an Executive Director, or member of the senior leadership team of a nonprofit organization with a minimum operating budget greater than $1M.
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in progressively responsible roles within senior management positions at a nonprofit or mission-driven corporation.
- Experience working with disabled persons and an understanding of the changing landscape of services and funding are strongly preferred.
- A business mindset with a proven track record in managing a strategic planning process, resulting in improved efficiency, program effectiveness, and sustainability of organizational budget.
- Demonstrated fundraising success with individual donors, foundations, and corporate partnerships.
- Demonstrated commitment to continued professional growth and the development of employees and Board of Directors.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The salary range for this role is $145,000 - $1700,000. ILCSC offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package that includes vacation and sick time, plus a Simple IRA with an employer match and insurance offerings. This full-time, in-person position is based in Van Nuys, CA and requires local travel to ILCSC locations and to meet with community partners and funders.
