Sustainability Specialist, Certification Systems

The Sustainability Specialist – Certification Systems will support Enviva’s efforts to lead the industry in its commitment to responsible sourcing. S/he will work in team settings to ensure Enviva’s third party certification systems operate efficiently. S/he will provide business development support by evaluating new standards and when necessary, working with scheme owners to find innovative solutions to technical challenges. S/he will support and manage data collection related to ESG and customer/investor questionnaires including GHG and other reporting metrics.

Responsibilities

The Specialist plays an important role in fulfilling the company’s vision of excellence and leadership in providing renewable feedstocks that improve the environmental profile of energy generation and bioproducts development.  S/he will have an entrepreneurial spirit and will be a strategist and an analytical thinker dedicated to Enviva’s mission of sustainable biomass sourcing. The Sustainability Specialist will report to the Senior Manager, Sustainability and be responsible for the following workflows:

Certification Systems

Provide support to ensure Enviva retains required certifications to multiple Standards including:

  • Forest Stewardship Council® Chain of Custody and Controlled Wood
  • Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certifications Chain of Custody
  • Sustainable Forestry Initiative® Chain of Custody
  • Sustainable Forestry Initiative® Fiber Sourcing
  • Sustainable Biomass Program Standard 1, 2, 4, 5 and associated Instruction Documents

Provide support to management of the Enviva credit ledger and processing certification claims.

As markets develop engage with new certifiers and new schemes to evaluate and develop solutions to make those schemes operational, for example:

  • ISCC/CORSIA
  • Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials
  • Others as needed

Customer and Commercial Sustainability Requirements

  • Support data collection for customers
    • Review and update annual customer sustainability questionnaires
  • Participate in GHG data collection and data audits for Sustainable Biomass Program Audit Reports (SARs)
  • Provide support to Commercial Sustainability Analyst to model GHG emissions scenarios for customers and new use cases for biomass

Environmental, Social and Governance

  • Manage annual sustainability and ESG reporting processes.
  • Manage data reporting system for GHG, carbon, energy consumption and water use and other reporting metrics.
  • Work cross functionally to identify opportunities for reductions of resource consumption.

Any additional tasks as assigned by Senior Manager, Sustainability.

Qualifications

  • BS in Forest Management, Sustainable Biomaterials or related field
  • 3 years experience related to sustainability and certification programs
    • Working knowledge of certification systems
  • Experience with internal and external system auditing such as:
    • Leading and managing internal and external audits and audit teams
    • Managing the collection of audit data and information
    • Closing audits and addressing findings
  • Ability to maintain high levels of professionalism and safety while visiting working forestry operations and/or interfacing with suppliers and landowners
  • Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision to meet objectives and deadlines
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and similar data management systems
  • Effective communication skills

Travel requirements

Ability to travel up to 30% of the time.
