Electrolyzer Design Engineer

About Equatic

Equatic addresses one of mankind’s most pressing problems, climate change, by removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, while co-producing hydrogen (H2) as a green fuel, both at very low cost. This is based on a novel process that allows electrolyzing sea water, and which stabilizes CO2 permanently in the form of dissolved bicarbonate ions (in seawater), and solid mineral carbonates. Equatic recently announced the construction of the world’s largest marine carbon dioxide removal facility in Singapore, with a CO2 removal capacity of ~3.5 kilotonnes CO2 per year, as well as engineering & design for a commercial plant in Canada with the capacity to remove 100 kilotonnes CO2 per year. Equatic has offtake contracts in place over up to 80 kilotonnes of CO2 removal credits and H2 production to fill the capacity of these plants.

About the role

The Electrolyzer Design Engineer will work closely with Equatic’s technical development team, in particular the CTO and the VP Manufacturing & Supply Chain, to refine designs of Equatic’s electrolyzer and key elements of the balance of plant, with the objective to develop better products at lower cost. This will involve defining the manufacturing processes, FEED, materials selection, tolerances, standardization, cost calculation and modeling.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Improve on existing electrolyzer designs with a focus on manufacturability: functional requirements, aspect ratios, materials, tolerances, for the unit cell, stacks and stack assemblies
  • Identify the most promising ways to reduce the cost of Equatic’s technology components and systems, prioritizing the highest leverage and lowest effort opportunities
  • Iterate and refine this design through successive prototype stages, from proof-of-concept to design optimized for manufacturability, including planning design freezes for successive versions.
  • Coordinate with the internal tech development team on testing plans, including efficiency and durability parameters.
  • Identify the manufacturing processes and vendors most suitable to execute the reduced-cost design improvements
  • Coordinate/steer engineering vendors
  • Based on final design, prepare engineering documentation to be delivered to manufacturers for large-scale production.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Work location: Los Angeles, Equatic office, no remote option
  • S. or M.S. in Engineering: Mechanical, Industrial, or equivalent experience
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in design for manufacturing and assembly
  • Knowledge of wide range of manufacturing and prototyping processes
  • An established portfolio of independent and team projects where he/she took the product from initial concept to mechanical design to manufactured product, preferably in electrolyzers or fuel cells
  • Skilled in CAD
  • Knowledge and understanding of mechanics of materials and common alloys
  • Familiar with current standards and directives in chemical and plant engineering.
  • Proven experience in SHE and Hazops
  • Proven expertise in manufacturing of engineered process equipment and deployment
  • Demonstrated ability of taking ownership, being driven and result oriented, holding yourself and others accountable for success.
  • Excellent communication skills, forthcoming in interpersonal relationships
  • Demonstrated history of being a team builder and player, that has strong communication skills and works seamlessly across organizations.
  • Highly structured thinking including the ability to define overarching development plans and to track plan execution among different team members and internal/ external research partners
  • Passionate about carbon management solutions
