Position Summary

Evergreen Action seeks a Senior Vice President (SVP), Programs to work with our Executive Director in overseeing the development and execution of strategic programs and campaigns that advance and protect bold climate policies. As a member of our Senior Leadership team, the SVP, Programs will play a key role in helping us advance our mission of tackling the climate crisis and while forging a just and thriving 100% clean energy economy. The SVP will help guide our political strategy, strengthen electoral engagement, and ensure our organization is positioned to drive impactful climate advocacy at the federal and state levels. 

The primary responsibilities for this role will include serving as a thought partner to the Executive Director and the Senior Leadership Team to set the strategic direction of the organization, managing senior staff and overseeing three teams, building and strengthening organizational relationships with movement partners, and helping design and champion equitable policies to address the climate crisis. In addition, the person in this role will serve as a spokesperson for Evergreen with the media and key decision-makers and help set our fundraising strategy while directly raising resources for the organization. This includes articulating a policy vision to equitably tackle the climate crisis and fostering the political landscape necessary to advance those policies. 

As an SVP, this person will operate as a key organizational leader internally and externally, generating the trust and confidence of the staff, partners, donors and external decision-makers while clearly articulating Evergreen’s vision. They will be expected to stand in for the Executive Director, as needed from time to time. The SVP, Programs will model organizational values and vision, shared leadership and decision-making, and support practices that empower Evergreen staff and consultants to achieve Evergreen’s mission and foster an equitable and inclusive working environment.

What You'll Do

Primary Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Vision-Setting: Work with the Executive Director, Senior Leadership Team and Board of Directors to help set the direction and strategic vision for the organization. Collaborate with the Executive Director, Senior Leadership Team and staff to establish goals and plans to achieve that vision. 

Senior Staff and Team Management: Serve as a key senior manager in the organization, overseeing the direct management of the Federal, States, and Policy teams while helping demonstrate and set robust managerial practices and policies for the entire organization. 

Policy and Political Advocacy: Advise on Evergreen’s policy engagement with federal, state, and local governments, coordinating efforts to ensure the successful advancement of priority policies to tackle the climate crisis and build a more just economy.

Partnership Building: Strengthen partnerships with political stakeholders, including elected officials, grassroots organizations, coalitions, and advocacy partners, to amplify and collaboratively build Evergreen’s policy agenda.

Secondary Responsibilities

Fundraising and Development: Work with the Executive Director and Senior Fundraising Director to ensure that we are raising enough revenue to support achieving our organizational goals. This will include serving as a key fundraiser who meets directly with donors and foundations, as well as helping set our overall organizational fundraising strategy.

Spokesperson and Communication:  With support and collaboration from our Senior Communications Director, serve as a key spokesperson for the organization with members of the media, on social media, and with key decision makers.

Core Experiences & Competencies

  • A commitment to defeating the climate crisis in an equitable way, galvanizing action from staff, consultants, movement partners, external decision-makers and other key stakeholders
  • Experience working with climate policy at both the national and state level
  • Experience working at the nexus of policy and politics with track record in political strategy, electoral campaigns, and/or issue advocacy
  • Proven organizational leadership, including some combination of management, fundraising, strategic planning, and/or operational experience
  • Demonstrated track record as a people manager, with a strong interest in and excitement for mentoring and professionally developing staff
  • A commitment and demonstrated capability to advance equity, inclusion, environmental justice, culture, and movement building

Additional Leadership Skills

  • Ability to lead a team in a way that inspires trust and fosters a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture
  • Proven ability to win campaigns and deliver robust outcomes, and experience in coaching staff to do the same
  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development/project management, and outcome facilitation
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills working with staff, consultants, funders, and other key stakeholders to build trust, collaboration, inclusion, and impact
  • Strong relationship- and trust-building skills, including experience forging and maintaining relationships with political stakeholders, grassroots organizations, and coalitions
  • Desire to work collaboratively with other members of Leadership in service of the organizational mission and development

Additional Experience

  • Law degree or legal background is a plus

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $264,500
