Senior Engineering Manager, Platform Engineering (Developer Experience)
Everlaw is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager, Platform to lead teams focused on developer experience, developer productivity, and AI-powered developer tooling, enabling engineers to ship high-quality software quickly, safely, and at scale.
You'll own roadmaps for build/test infrastructure, CI, local development environments, and developer workflows. You'll also own the strategy and execution for AI-assisted and autonomous developer tooling: evaluating, building, and deploying the tools that automate mechanical work so engineers can focus on higher-value problems.
This role sits at the intersection of platform engineering and AI. We're investing in a future where agents actively participate in our SDLC: automating test triage, lint fixes, code review, and eventually broader development tasks. That future requires a solid foundation: reliable CI, fast feedback loops, observable infrastructure, and tooling that engineers actually want to use. You'll own both sides — making the developer platform trustworthy enough for agents to run on, and shipping the AI-powered tooling that multiplies engineer output.
About the Team
The Platform Engineering org is driving a multi-phase program to make Everlaw's SDLC agent-ready: from stabilizing CI reliability and developer feedback loops, to shipping autonomous agent workflows in secure sandboxed environments, to enabling agents as first-class contributors to our codebase. Your team will be a key driver of this program, working alongside Release Engineering (which owns release and deploy paths) and the AI Platform team.
About Everlaw
Engineering is the backbone of the Everlaw Platform. We build features and functionality into the product and its supporting cloud infrastructure systems and ensure its smooth functioning. We also provide data and insights to the rest of Everlaw. At our core, we like to build and enjoy the creative process of building software that is smart, that works well, that scales well, and that is reliable and secure. We do this by supporting and empowering our team members to do their best work, by tackling challenging and complex engineering problems and by nurturing and supporting each team member through mentoring, coaching, and comprehensive feedback.
Everlaw's mission is to promote justice by illuminating truth. Our company culture is open and vibrant and we're committed to the professional growth of our team members, offering an annual learning and development stipend and regular check-ins with managers regarding career goals. If you're looking for a place that values passion, integrity, thinking big, and a desire to learn, we'd love to hear from you! Think you're missing some of the skills and are hesitant to apply? We do not believe in the 'perfect' candidate and encourage you to apply if you feel you can bring value to our team.
This is a full-time position based in our Oakland, California office with a hybrid work schedule: in office M/W/Th with the option to work from home Tu/Fr.
Getting started
- We want you to feel like part of the team early on! Our onboarding process will integrate you into the company with informative sessions on our product, policies, processes, and team structure and goals. [And you’ll spend meaningful time getting to know your direct reports and discover what excites and challenges them.]
- We’re excited for you to learn, grow, and contribute right away! We trust that you’ll bring experience and knowledge that will uplift and uplevel the team, but we don’t expect you to know everything on Day 1.
In your role, you'll...
Stabilize & Mature the Developer Platform
- Lead platform teams that build and evolve core developer tooling (spanning build/test infrastructure, CI, local development environments, and developer workflows) to improve engineer productivity and time-to-value.
- Drive reliability improvements across the developer-facing critical path: reduce CI flakiness, improve build/test speed, and ensure fast, reliable feedback loops for both human and agent-generated changes.
- Partner with Release Engineering and Cloud Infrastructure on shared goals: your team ensures the build/test foundation is solid; they own the release and deploy paths that depend on it.
- Ensure operational excellence for developer platform services with clear SLOs, robust observability, and incident/bug management practices.
Ship AI-Powered Developer Tooling
- Own the strategy and execution for AI-assisted and autonomous developer workflows — evaluating, building, and deploying tools that automate mechanical tasks (lint fixes, test triage, code review, CVE remediation) so engineers can focus on architecture and product problems.
- Partner with Security Engineering to deliver and operate secure sandboxed environments for agentic AI tool use, enabling agents to edit, build, test, and open PRs safely.
- Stay current with the rapidly evolving AI developer tooling landscape. Run fast experiments — prototype, measure, and make kill/scale decisions quickly, while building durable solutions where the signal supports it.
- Define and track success metrics for AI tooling: adoption rates, time saved, CI impact, and developer satisfaction.
Treat Platform as a Product
- Treat internal engineers as your customers. Gather feedback, measure adoption, and iterate on what you ship, not just launch and move on.
- Drive org-wide adoption of new tools, workflows, and standards. Build the documentation, enablement, and evangelism that turn a good tool into an org-wide habit.
- Establish and use developer efficiency metrics (e.g., build/test times, CI pass rates, change failure rate, AI tool adoption) to identify bottlenecks and plan ambitious improvements.
Lead & Grow People
- Coach and develop engineers and leads; provide actionable feedback, elevate technical execution, and foster an inclusive, high-accountability culture.
- Collaborate closely with Engineering Operations, Security Engineering, Cloud Infrastructure, Product, and Design to synthesize requirements and prioritize impactful investments.
- Partner with Engineering Operations to improve processes for alignment, goal setting, empowerment, and cross-team execution across Engineering.
- Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, adjusting altitude from strategy to technical deep dives as needed.
About you
- You have 5+ years as a senior engineer building developer productivity tools and/or highly available platform services (e.g., storage, pub-sub, search, caching, observability) and/or deep experience with infrastructure/cloud technologies (e.g., Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker).
- You have 3+ years directly managing software engineers and/or technical leads, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and growing a high-performing team.
- You have 2+ years building and leading developer experience or platform teams that deliver internal platforms and tooling with measurable productivity outcomes (e.g., faster builds/tests, improved CI/CD lead times, higher deployment frequency).
- You have experience with AI developer tooling: you've evaluated, deployed, or built AI-powered tools for engineering teams (code generation, AI-assisted code review, automated testing, or similar). You certainly don't need to be an ML engineer, but you should have hands-on conviction about how AI is changing developer workflows, grounded in real experience, not just enthusiasm.
- You know how to sequence AI investments against infrastructure reality: you understand that advanced automation requires a reliable foundation, but you don't use that as an excuse to defer AI tooling indefinitely. You can run both tracks in parallel.
- You're comfortable with ambiguity and building from scratch. Parts of this role involve standing up new capabilities with no prior art internally: setting direction, making early bets, and building credibility before you have results.
- You have experience managing scalable database infrastructure (e.g., Postgres, MySQL, or equivalent).
- You can communicate at the right altitude with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and you've led cross-functional roadmaps with Engineering Operations, Security Engineering, Cloud Infrastructure, Product, and Design.
- You are authorized to work in the United States. Please note that currently, Everlaw is not sponsoring employment visas.
Pluses
- Experience with developer ecosystems in Java, Python, or TypeScript; familiarity with Gradle, Bazel, Maven, or similar build systems.
- Background building or managing React/TypeScript apps and frontend build tooling (e.g., NPM, Webpack), or optimizing backend services (e.g., Java + Gradle/Kotlin).
- Experience building and supporting developer tools including scripts, dashboards, CLIs, and developer portals.
- Practice measuring and communicating developer efficiency using metrics dashboards (e.g., Databricks, Snowflake, Grafana) to guide prioritization and demonstrate impact.
- Hands-on experience building or deploying AI agents, LLM-powered automation, or "Copilot-at-scale" initiatives within an engineering organization.
- Experience driving org-wide adoption of new developer tools or workflows — with evidence of change management, documentation, enablement, and measured adoption outcomes.
- Familiarity with frameworks and metrics for assessing and improving engineering effectiveness.
