About the role

We are seeking an experienced and commercially aware Head of Legal, VP to lead our global legal function. You will be the primary legal advisor to our Sales, Product and Procurement Teams and our Executive Team. Managing a team of  2 to 3 paralegals, you and the team will provide expert guidance on a wide range of legal, regulatory, and compliance issues affecting a mission lead fast-paced international software business. You will be working closely with external legal counsel and have access to external counsel as and when required.

The work requires knowledge and experience of commercial, corporate, IP, and data privacy law, particularly as they pertain to SaaS and cloud-based solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Legal Leadership & Advisory
    • Provide expert legal guidance to senior leadership and teams on a broad range of matters including commercial contracts, software licensing, data protection, employment, and corporate governance.
    • Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements including SaaS terms and conditions, licensing agreements, and partnership contracts.
    • Advise on legal implications of product development, marketing, and customer operations across jurisdictions.
    • Advise and take action on legal and compliance updates as a result of M&A activity 
  • Terms & Conditions Management
    • Develop and maintain standard terms and conditions for software use, services, and partnerships.
    • Ensure alignment with international laws and local regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, export control laws).
    • Collaborate with product and commercial teams to ensure terms are both legally robust and commercially practical.
  • Intellectual Property (IP)
    • Advise on IP strategy, including patent, trademark, and copyright protection.
    • Lead responses to IP infringement claims and proactively mitigate IP risks.
    • Support enforcement of the company’s IP rights and manage relationships with external counsel for IP litigation if required.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
    • Monitor and interpret changes in relevant legislation and regulation.
    • Ensure company policies and practices comply with applicable laws, particularly in data privacy, employment law, and export control.
    • Manage disputes, investigations, and litigation with external counsel as necessary.
  • Team Leadership & Management
    • Lead, manage, and mentor a small team of paralegals and legal professionals.
    • Allocate work, support professional development, and establish clear performance expectations.
    • Foster a proactive, solution-focused legal culture within the organization.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration
    • Work closely with teams including product, sales, HR, finance, and compliance to support company objectives.
    • Train internal teams on key legal concepts (e.g., contract basics, confidentiality, IP protection).

Essential Criteria 

  • Qualified to practice law  in the UK with 3+ years of post-qualification experience, ideally with a combination of law firm and in-house roles.
  • Strong background in commercial contracts, technology law, corporate transactions, and data privacy.
  • Demonstrated experience advising software/SaaS companies or working in the technology sector.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proven ability to operate in an international environment and manage cross-border legal matters.
  • Strategic mindset with a hands-on approach and high attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with key jurisdictions (e.g., US, EU) is highly desirable.

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous experience scaling legal functions in high-growth environments.
  • Knowledge of AI, cybersecurity
