Cloud Infrastructure and Security Engineer

EvolutionaryScale’s mission is to develop artificial intelligence to understand biology for the benefit of human health and society, through open, safe, and responsible research, and in partnership with the scientific community. Over the next ten years AI will transform biological design, making molecules and entire cells programmable. We will develop the foundation models for biology that enable this.

To continue to move the field forward in this emerging area, we prioritize individuals who have shown excellence and creativity in their respective domains over specific domain expertise. Having both biology and AI expertise is great, but not a requirement.

Our team does both deep research and product development, not only building the frontier biological AI models in the field but also putting them in the hands of the researchers at the forefront of the life sciences. This fundamentally requires elite engineers and scientists working together to solve big research and product challenges. We are building a world class multi-disciplinary team spanning AI research, engineering, biology research, and business roles, which requires strong communication and collaboration skills across roles.

The EvolutionaryScale team is based in two locations: San Francisco and New York. We believe in flexibility around work schedules and locations, but expect that our team members will work half of the days or more of most weeks from one of our two offices.

The role

As a cloud infrastructure and security engineer on the team, you will help architect not only the cloud services behind our product offerings, but also mission critical infrastructure used by our research teams. You will build in secure-by-design guardrails, ensuring our work meets the security requirements of our enterprise customers. Lastly, you will also help the team improve our workflows while establishing and implementing security best practices and policies.

At EvolutionaryScale, we are trying to create the best foundational protein models responsibly and securely. You will play an integral role in making this happen while working at the intersection of AI and Biology.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with engineers to design, build, and validate secure and scalable cloud architectures for our product and research offerings.
  • Develop and Deploy security guardrails through reusable patterns to implement secure-by-design principles
  • Implement information security controls, patterns, and processes that support risk assessments, secure outcomes, and meet the secure requirements of our external partners and customers.
  • Develop and mature access management capabilities to ensure safe and secure access to important cloud resources for researchers and production.
  • Advocate and establish security best practices among the teams.
  • Improve workflows and elevate engineering and research productivity.

Beyond the above core responsibilities, we expect the ideal candidate be able to also contribute significantly to some of the below additional responsibilities:

  • Implement automated cloud infrastructure security scanning, detection, and alerting for the cloud infrastructure and product offering.
  • Participate with vendors in the compliance certification process (SOC2, etc), interfacing across engineering team when necessary. Support the controls/evidence gathering and be the primary technical POC.
  • Select and integrate vendor offerings (cloud security posture management, data loss prevention, IT vendors for EDR, etc.)

Experience: Even if you don’t check every box but feel you could make an impact, we encourage you to apply.

  • 7-10 years of hands-on cloud infrastructure experience, AWS preferred
  • 3+ years demonstrated success at designing, implementing, deploying, securing, and monitoring highly-available, critical production systems.
  • Hands-on experience with a variety of technologies and approaches in both the cloud infrastructure and security spaces. Ex: identity, workload hardening, networking, secure-by-default settings.
  • Demonstrated experience with software development, dev-ops, and deploying to cloud environments.
  • Experience performing threat modeling and design reviews to assess security implications and requirements for introducing new technologies
  • Experience with corporate security including endpoint management, EDR, and access management preferred
  • Experience with terraform preferred
  • Experience supporting compliance certification processes through collecting and providing control evidence (e.g., HIPAA, SOC, SOC2) is a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written cross-functional communication skills

The salary range for this position is $250,000 - $300,000 per year, plus a competitive equity package. Compensation package will vary based on job-related skills, experience, and knowledge. The compensation package also includes comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits.
