As the Engineering Manager for Focal, you will be responsible for leading the specialized engineering team dedicated to our AI-powered insights platform. Your leadership will be crucial in building and scaling the complex systems that power Focal, focusing on search, large-scale data processing, and Generative AI. You will drive the technical execution required to deliver a best-in-class, secure, and performant AI solution for our institutional clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage the Focal engineering team, fostering a culture of high performance and technical excellence.
- Drive the technical strategy and architecture for Focal's backend systems, with a focus on search, data processing, and AI/GenAI model integration.
- Oversee the end-to-end software development lifecycle, ensuring the timely and successful delivery of high-quality code and features.
- Partner closely with Product Managers other stakeholders to translate product requirements into robust and scalable technical solutions.
- Champion best practices in software development, including agile methodologies, code reviews, and testing.
- Ensure the scalability, reliability, and security of the Focal platform to meet the demands of institutional-grade service.
- Maintain deep, hands-on knowledge of the technology stack and contribute to technical discussions and problem-solving.
- Stay current with emerging trends and technologies in Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), information retrieval, and data engineering.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; Master’s or PhD preferred.
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3 years in a technical leadership or management role.
- Proven experience building and leading teams focused on search, information retrieval, or large-scale data systems.
- Strong background in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and specifically Generative AI (GenAI), including experience with LLMs and their application.
- Hands-on experience with relevant technologies such as vector databases, distributed data processing frameworks (e.g., Spark), and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP).
- Exceptional project management skills and ability to manage priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of guiding a technical team and articulating complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
The base pay for this role is expected to be between $213,000-$288,000 USD for a Manager level and $242,000-$328,000 for a Senior Manager level in the New York City and San Francisco Bay Area. This expected base pay range is based on information at the time this post was generated. This role will also be eligible for other forms of compensation such as a performance linked bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package. Actual compensation for a successful candidate will be determined based on a number of factors such as location, skillset, experience, qualifications and the level at which the candidate is hired.
