Team Overview
The SFM legal and compliance team is a seasoned group of attorneys, compliance officers, paralegals, and administrative support professionals. Our goal is to provide timely, business- oriented legal solutions that advance SFM’s business objectives while protecting its legal and financial interests and reputation. We support all aspects of SFM’s business including providing advice and counsel to senior management and family members, negotiating complex investment transactions, drafting and reviewing contracts, managing disputes and litigation, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Job Overview
SFM is seeking to recruit an experienced, business-minded attorney to join its team as Counsel – Family Office Attorney in the New York office. The Counsel will work on a broad range of legal matters under the supervision of the General Counsel, with a primary focus on supporting the legal needs of our family-member clients and their legal entities.
Major Responsibilities
- Document Review and Drafting: Review, draft, and negotiate legal documents related to family office operations, vendors, investments, real estate, transportation, construction, and estate planning.
- Corporate Law and Business Affairs: Offer counsel on corporate governance, entity creation and dissolution, and other business operations as they relate to family-owned entities or holdings.
- Dispute Resolution and Litigation Management: Provide legal advice on dispute resolution through mediation and arbitration, and where necessary supervise any ongoing litigation.
- Project Management: Organize, track, and update family members on all ongoing legal workstreams.
- Estate and Succession Planning: Develop and implement comprehensive estate plans to protect the family’s wealth and assets and supervise outside counsel’s drafting of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and other related documents.
- Tax Planning: Provide legal advice on tax implications and strategies for family members, including advising on income, gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer taxes.
- Investment Structuring: Work with SFM colleagues to establish appropriate legal structures for investments, including private equity, venture capital, real estate, and other traditional or alternative investments.
- Philanthropy: Provide legal guidance on charitable giving, including the establishment of charitable trusts, foundations, and other philanthropic entities.
- Legal Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including securities laws, tax laws, family office regulations, and any other relevant legal frameworks on a worldwide basis.
- Supervision of Outside Counsel: Diligence, select, engage, and supervise outside legal counsel.
- Confidentiality and Trust: Maintain the highest level of discretion and professionalism in dealing with sensitive family matters and confidential information.

- Active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (New York preferred).
- Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant legal experience in general corporate law.
- Experience will have been gained at a law firm and/or as an in-house attorney with a focus on general corporate and/or transactional law.
- The successful candidate will also have:
- An excellent grounding in contracts law and corporate law, with commensurately significant first-hand drafting and negotiation skills.
- Outstanding intellectual ability, attention to detail, work ethic, and written and oral communication skills.
- Strong business acumen and the ability to understand the business consequences of legal advice.
- Practical business judgment, the ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly and succinctly, and the ability to assess the trade-off between legal risk and business reward.
- The ability to execute in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
Anticipated Salary Range
We anticipate the base salary of this role to be between $150,000-$200,000. In addition to a base salary, the successful candidate will also be eligible to receive a discretionary, year-end bonus.
