This is a high-impact, highly visible role sitting within the Accounting organization and reporting to the Assistant Controller. The Technical Accounting Manager will serve as the primary subject matter expert for complex accounting matters affecting the sports collectibles industry, while also owning specific areas of the monthly close process.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with deep technical accounting knowledge, strong communication skills, and the ability to translate complex accounting standards into clear, actionable conclusions. Experience in a consumer products, media, or sports/entertainment company is a plus, as is prior experience with loyalty programs, revenue recognition, and inventory valuation.

What you will be doing...

  • Research, prepare, and maintain technical accounting memos documenting the Company's positions on complex accounting matters in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
  • Assess new and evolving business programs for accounting considerations and policy implications.
  • Lead and manage the quarterly reserve analysis process, including allowances for excess and obsolete inventory, returns, and other balance sheet exposures specific to the trading card business.
  • Own designated areas of the monthly close process, including preparation and review of related journal entries, reserve and accrual calculations, and account reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and adherence to close timelines.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact during the external audit, coordinating requests, preparing supporting documentation, and resolving open items in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Perform P&L classification assessments to ensure proper presentation of revenues, costs, and expenses in the income statement, including matters related to gross vs. net revenue recognition and cost of goods sold vs. operating expense determinations.
  • Respond to ad hoc technical accounting inquiries from business partners, senior leadership, and the broader Finance organization.
  • Monitor the standard-setting landscape including new ASC pronouncements and SEC guidance, and evaluate the potential impact on Fanatics Collectibles' financial statements.
  • Collaborate with FP&A, legal, operations, and commercial teams to understand new contracts, programs, and transactions from an accounting perspective.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of accounting policies and internal controls related to areas of technical complexity.

What you will bring....

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • A CPA (Certified Public Accountant) certification is preferred for this role.
  • 5-8+ years of accounting experience, with a strong foundation in technical accounting research and financial reporting. Public and private experience preferred.
  • Prior Big 4 public accounting experience strongly preferred; experience with consumer products, media, entertainment, sports, or e-commerce clients is a significant plus.
  • Demonstrated experience researching and documenting complex accounting issues under U.S. GAAP, including areas such as ASC 606 (Revenue Recognition), ASC 330 (Inventory), and ASC 805 (Business Combinations).
  • Experience managing or coordinating external audit relationships.
  • Exceptional technical research and writing skills, with the ability to prepare clear, concise, and well-supported accounting memos and policy documents.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with a demonstrated ability to assess multi-faceted business programs and identify key accounting issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex accounting conclusions to non-accounting stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to build strong working relationships across Finance, Legal, Operations, and Commercial functions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
