
Staff Systems Engineer – Battery HV Systems

Your Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Systems Engineer specializing in High Voltage (HV) Battery Systems. The ideal candidate will lead the system-level development, integration, and validation of battery systems used in electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage systems, or industrial applications. You will be responsible for system architecture, requirements engineering, functional safety, and cross-functional coordination across hardware, software, and mechanical teams.
Responsibility
System Design and Architecture:
- Lead the design and development of high-voltage battery systems, including battery management systems (BMS), thermal management, and electrical distribution.
- Define system-level requirements, specifications, and architectures for HV battery packs, ensuring alignment with vehicle or product performance goals.
- Develop and maintain finite element models for cells, battery modules, and HV components.
- Specify components such as fuses, contactors, relays, busbars, and HV/LV connectors.
Integration and Testing:
- Lead integration efforts for HV components, including battery packs, drive units, and cabling, into vehicle or system platforms
- Oversee testing efforts, including reliability, environmental, and accelerated lifetime testing of battery packs to ensure safety and performance.
- Design, build, instrument, and automate test equipment for HV battery programs.
- Support aftersales diagnostics and troubleshooting for HV battery systems.
Team Leadership and Collaboration:
- Lead cross-functional teams, including electrical, mechanical, and software engineers, to ensure seamless integration of HV systems.
- Collaborate with suppliers to develop innovative solutions for HV battery components, such as bussed electrical centers (BECs)
- Coordinate with software teams to integrate battery control systems and telemetry systems for monitoring and operation.
Regulatory Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations for HV battery systems, including safety and environmental requirements.
- Implement safe working practices for high-voltage systems, including isolation monitoring and cell balancing.
Project Management:
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables for HV battery system development.
- Track and mitigate risks related to system performance, component sourcing, and production scalability.
- Support automated assembly processes for HV battery components.
Innovation and Optimization:
- Drive advancements in battery system performance, efficiency, and cost reduction.
- Stay updated on emerging technologies in lithium-ion batteries, energy storage, and vehicle electrification
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
- 10+ years of systems engineering experience in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment.
- Solid multi-disciplinary engineering skills in electrical, mechanical, software and thermal domains and a very firm grasp of the physics of each, ideally in the aerospace, automotive or similar domains.
- Understanding of high voltage electronics, battery systems and controls and energy systems.
- Experience with MATLAB/Simulink or similar systems engineering tools.
- Experience with creating engineering requirements and specifications.
- Understanding of system safety and reliability concepts.
- First-rate analytical capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with automotive OEMs or Tier 1 battery system suppliers.
- Experience in thermal management systems for batteries.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Working knowledge of simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS).
- Agile or Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) exposure is a plus.
Annual Salary Range:
(130K - 160K DOE), plus benefits and incentive plans
