(Senior) Scientist, Microbial Formulation

Position summary

Fieldstone Bio is looking for a highly motivated Scientist or Senior Scientist to join our growing team, where they will work towards development and assessment of different formulations to use with engineered microorganisms for functional deployment into different outdoor environments. A successful candidate will independently contribute to the implementation of formulations for stabilization, extended storage, and revival of microbes for downstream use. This is a lab-based role that will work collaboratively with the company’s Synthetic Biology team and AI Data team. This role provides a unique opportunity to impact the development of research and development strategies at an early-stage biotechnology company. This role is on-site and located in Woburn, MA.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead development of formulations with Fieldstone Bio’s engineered microorganisms for environmental sensing purposes
• Development and implementation of assays for evaluating how formulation affects various aspects of sensor function, including assessment of cell viability, targeting efficiency, and microbial sensing capabilities
• Develop formulation strategies to improve sensor stability, function, and shelf-life
• Perform analytical characterization of formulations and longevity studies
• Ensure timely delivery of goals for set milestones
• Clearly present scientific findings in cross-functional project team meetings
• Document processes, SOPs, and results in an Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) system

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Bioengineering and a minimum of 2+ years of industry experience
• Demonstrated success in formulation technology with a proven track record of product development, preferably with experience with agriculture formulations
• Experience formulating microbial cells for survivability and function
• Depth of knowledge of current technologies used for formulating microbes for environmental purposes
• Experience with scale-up or fermentation of microorganisms a plus
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and outside-of-the-box thinking
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
• Excellent verbal and written communication
• Versatile and flexible scientist who thrives in a fast-paced and collaborative lab environment
