Staff Battery Manufacturing Engineer

Figure is an AI Robotics company developing a general purpose humanoid. Our Humanoid is designed for corporate tasks targeting labor shortages and jobs that are undesirable or unsafe. We are based in Sunnyvale, CA and require 5 days/week in-office collaboration. 

We are looking for a Staff Battery Manufacturing Engineer to lead the development of our battery pack manufacturing line for both prototype and production scale. In this role, you will work with a highly cross functional group to innovate at the manufacturing level and enable an industry leading battery pack for a humanoid robot.

Responsibilities: 

  • Drive battery pack manufacturing line development efforts both in house and with third party machine/automation suppliers/CM’s
  • Set up and manage battery pack manufacturing equipment including wire bonding, adhesive dispense and potting machines
  • Develop manufacturing process flow diagrams and control plans
  • Specify requirements and acceptance criteria for manufacturing equipment and processes required for battery pack and module manufacturing
  • Design mechanical and electromechanical fixtures in CATIA V6
  • Drive machine qualification including correlation, process capability (CP/CPK) and Gage Repeatability / Reproducibility (GR&R)
  • Work with the product design team to facilitate pack design for manufacturability and design for assembly
  • Monitor production metrics and KPIs, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions
  • Program adhesives dispense paths and potting dispense machines, optimize for yield and cycle time. Troubleshoot failures and apply corrective actions




Requirements: 

  • 7+ years of experience in battery manufacturing
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or similar field
  • Experience with setting up and running a wire bonder for battery pack manufacturing
  • Experience with developing manual and automated battery assembly techniques and fixturing
  • Experience with specifying and procuring manufacturing equipment, tools, and fixtures required for battery production
  • Working knowledge of GD&T principles
  • Experience setting up and running additional battery pack manufacturing equipment including adhesive dispense machines, potting machines, automated cell stacking, conveyance systems, etc.

Bonus Qualifications: 

  • Experience with designing and developing automated cell incoming quality control fixtures (voltage, resistance, temperature, dimensional, etc.)
  • Experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), including implementation, integration, and optimization
  • Understands machine qualification including calibration, correlation, capability, repeatability and reproducibility
  • Experience with statistical tools such as GR&R, SPC and CP/CPK to ensure process/fixtures and scalable and are continuing to perform properly
  • CATIA V6 experience
  • Working knowledge of safety considerations in the battery pack manufacturing setting
  • Knowledge of cell manufacturing processes and considerations
