Senior Director / Vice President, Platform Technology

Cambridge, MA USA

What if… you could join an organization that creates, resources, and builds life sciences companies that invent breakthrough technologies to transform health care?

In today’s healthcare system, disease diagnosis often relies on invasive procedures, such as biopsies, which enable direct interrogation of cellular and tissue health at the suspected source of disease. Due to their invasiveness, cost, and general inconvenience to the patient, biopsies are often conducted after onset of symptomatic disease presenting one of the largest barriers to delivering interventions early in disease progression when they are likely to be most impactful. Flagship Labs 103, Inc. is a privately held early-stage company that is building advanced technological and computational platforms to pioneer the detection of cellular dynamics from minimally invasive biospecimens that can be leveraged to connect individuals to the most effective interventions to prevent onset and progression of disease.

FL103 was founded by Flagship Pioneering, an innovation enterprise dedicated to originating and developing companies that invent breakthrough technologies that transform health care, agriculture, and sustainability. Since Flagship’s founding in 2000, the firm has originated and fostered more than 100 scientific ventures including Moderna Therapeutics, Generate Biomedicines, and Indigo Agriculture.

Position Summary:

FL103 is seeking a visionary and accomplished scientific leader to serve as Senior Director / Vice President of Platform Technology. This individual will play a foundational role in the design, development, and execution of FL103’s next-generation diagnostic platform aimed at detecting high-resolution signals from minimally invasive samples such as blood. The ideal candidate will bring a track record of innovation in diagnostics, having built and scaled assay technologies at a leading molecular diagnostics, life sciences, or precision medicine company. They will be responsible for shaping FL103’s technical strategy, building the scientific team, and helping to translate foundational discovery work into robust, scalable, and clinically meaningful assays. This is a rare opportunity to join a Flagship-founded company at the earliest stages with the chance to architect a platform with transformational potential in precision diagnostics, play a highly visible leadership role with direct influence on company trajectory, and engage with a world-class ecosystem of biotech founders, operators, and advisors.

Key Responsibilities

Platform Strategy & Execution

  • Define and execute the technical roadmap for FL103’s diagnostic assay platform
  • Lead cross-disciplinary efforts to integrate emerging approaches in EV biology, molecular profiling, and assay engineering
  • Develop robust, scalable workflows for sample processing, signal detection, and readout generation

Assay Innovation & Development

  • Drive assay development efforts across molecular modalities (e.g., RNA, protein, etc.)
  • Implement performance optimization pipelines to enhance sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility
  • Ensure compliance with quality and regulatory best practices, anticipating requirements for future clinical validation and regulatory filing

Team Leadership & Culture Building

  • Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing scientific and technical team.
  • Foster a culture of scientific rigor, creative problem-solving, and mission-driven execution

Partnerships & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Interface with external collaborators, CROs, and technology partners to accelerate platform development
  • Collaborate closely with founders, Flagship leadership, and business functions (e.g., finance, HR, legal etc.) to align technical progress with business strategy

Qualifications

  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, or a related field
  • 10+ years of industry experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role building diagnostic technologies at a high-growth company
  • Proven experience in developing, optimizing, and commercializing molecular diagnostic assays (preferably in oncology, neurology, or systemic disease contexts)
  • Deep expertise in one or more of the following:
    • Protein or RNA-based biomarker detection
    • Liquid biopsy / EV-based diagnostics
    • High-throughput or multi-modal molecular technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to take technologies from early-stage validation through to productization or clinical utility.
  • Experience building CLIA/LDT or IVD environments is highly desirable
  • Strong strategic instincts - able to prioritize technical investments based on clinical value and business need
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, and thriving in early-stage, fast-moving environments
