Associate Director, State Government Affairs

New York, New York, United States

Flex is a growth-stage, NYC headquartered FinTech company that is creating the best rent payment experience. It’s hard to believe that it’s 2024 and paying rent on time is expensive, inflexible, and difficult. We’re here to change that! Flex enables our users to pay rent throughout the month on a schedule that better fits their finances and budget. Our mission is to empower as many renters as possible with flexibility over their most significant recurring expense. After deliberately keeping a stealth profile as we built up unprecedented investor support and an enthusiastic user base, we are looking for motivated individuals to help us keep our mission growing. Will you be a part of the team?

We are seeking an experienced State Government Affairs leader to build awareness of Flex's mission, products, and social good initiatives among state policymakers and regulatory experts. This individual will also play a critical role in strengthening the company’s understanding of state-level policy environments across the U.S. The Director of State Government Affairs will collaborate across our business units, as well as with legal, compliance, and communications teams, to develop and implement state policy engagement programs that support our mission and enhance our ability to serve members and clients effectively.

This role requires a deep understanding of the state regulatory and political landscapes surrounding fintech and traditional consumer financial services firms, as well as proven experience applying this knowledge for companies operating within these sectors. The Director of State Government Affairs will work remotely or in key state capitals, with travel as needed.

What You’ll Do:

  • Represent Flex in engagements with state legislators, regulators, and other key stakeholders, building and maintaining strong relationships at the state level.
  • Monitor and analyze state-level legislation and proposed regulations to assess their potential impact on Flex’s business operations.
  • Provide timely updates to leadership on how evolving state policy landscapes may affect Flex.
  • Develop and execute state-level engagement strategies for legislation, regulations, and other policy matters.
  • Manage relationships with state lobbying firms and collaborate with relevant industry associations and trade groups.
  • Strengthen relationships with advocacy organizations and key stakeholders focused on state-level issues that align with Flex’s business priorities.

What You’ll Need:

  • At least 10+ years of experience in state government affairs, public policy, or politics, with a strong preference for experience in consumer financial services and fintech.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing proactive and reactive state policy engagement programs for consumer financial services and/or fintech companies.
  • Strong knowledge of state legislative and regulatory processes, as well as existing relationships with state policymakers, advocates, and trade groups involved in consumer financial services, rental housing, and fintech issues.
  • Experience in building and leading cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree.

Travel required as necessary.

The salary compensation range for this role will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and Flex's internal leveling guidelines and benchmarks. The base salary pay range will be $160,000 - $200,000
