Controller

Remote

Job Title: Controller

Job Level: Senior Manager (M3)

Location: Remote, within approved U.S. states (see below)

Awesome and its family of companies, including Flickr and SmugMug, are looking for an experienced Controller to build and lead the accounting function across our combined entities. This is a unique opportunity to own accounting operations for a portfolio of established, independent digital platforms serving millions of photographers and creators around the world.

Reporting directly to the CFO, the Controller will own all accounting operations, establish and strengthen internal controls, and deliver the accurate, timely financial reporting the business needs to make sound decisions. This role is foundational to the Finance team's next chapter: improving close cycle time, freeing strategic capacity, and building the accounting infrastructure to support a growing, multi-entity organization.

If you are a hands-on accounting leader who thrives in a lean, high-ownership environment and wants to make a real impact, this role was built for you.

Compensation: Awesome is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $115,000-$177,500. This position is also remote-friendly, and as such, compensation will ultimately be in line with the location in which the position is filled. Various factors, such as defined competency leveling and geographic location, will determine the final compensation for this role.

Benefits: Health, dental, vision insurance with 100% premium coverage for you and dependents. Health Savings Account contributions covering 90%+ of annual deductible. 401(k) with company match and immediate vesting. Professional development and learning opportunities. Remote work support (internet, fitness, coworking space reimbursements). Company-sponsored therapy and coaching sessions.

What You'll Lead:

  • Lead, develop, and support a team of accounting professionals — building the structure, clarity, and environment for them to do their best work and grow.
  • Partner closely with the CFO and Director of Finance to connect operational results to strategic priorities, helping teams across the business understand and act on their financials.
  • Drive the evolution of our financial systems and processes: identify automation opportunities, evaluate tools and integrations, and build toward a more efficient, tech-enabled finance function.
  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and accounting partners for annual reviews, compliance filings, and international obligations including domestic/state and VAT.

What You'll Own:

  • Month-end close: reconciliations, journal entries, consolidated financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow), with a continuous eye toward cycle time and quality.
  • Key accounting areas including revenue recognition, accounts payable, cash management, payroll oversight, and multi-entity consolidations.
  • Monthly reporting packages, management schedules, and financial tie-outs that give leadership an accurate picture of business performance.
  • Internal controls framework and segregation of duties to protect company assets.
  • Ongoing GAAP compliance and technical accounting research across all entities and revenue streams.
  • Cross-functional process improvement: eliminating manual work, clarifying deliverables, and reducing dependencies across the business.

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; MBA a plus
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with 3 years in leadership roles
  • CPA preferred
  • Strong command of U.S. GAAP and technical accounting capabilities across complex and evolving business models
  • A mindset focused on systems, automation, and continuous improvement, with a track record of making the accounting function better over time
  • Proven experience managing multi-entity accounting operations and consolidations
  • Hands-on experience implementing, owning, or improving NetSuite or a comparable ERP system
  • Strong process design, documentation, and organizational skills
  • Exceptional communication skills, rigorous attention to detail, high integrity, and dependability
  • Experience leading and developing accounting teams
  • Familiarity with international tax obligations, including VAT and multi-jurisdiction compliance, is a strong plus

Nice-to-Have:

  • Broad industry experience is a plus; our business spans subscription platforms and a growing events business, so comfort operating across diverse revenue models and business types is valuable
  • Experience working with large data sets and big data environments to drive accounting efficiency and accuracy
