Who We’re Looking For:

Fluxx is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the development and maintenance of our Grantmaker platform and oversee the engineering team behind it. You’re a technical leader who thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and has a proven track record of both engineering excellence and people leadership. You will build a high-performing team shipping on a predictable, sustainable cadence, spearhead AI-assisted development adoption to measurable productivity gains, and establish yourself as the trusted technical owner of the Grantmaker platform’s roadmap execution.

In this role, you’ll ensure your team is motivated, productive, and growing professionally, while consistently delivering high-quality, scalable features. You’ll drive architectural consistency, cross-team collaboration, and operational excellence. You will be accountable for your teams’ architecture, delivery and processes. This position reports directly to the SVP of Engineering.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead and deliver: Lead one or more engineering teams to ship high-quality features and maintain the Grantmaker platform. Own delivery timelines, stakeholder communication, and release quality.
  • Build and inspire: Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing distributed engineering team. Set clear expectations, run effective 1:1s, and create an environment where engineers feel motivated to contribute to a high-performing team.
  • ​​AI-assisted development strategy: Own your team’s AI tooling adoption—set measurable targets for GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and Claude.ai usage, track productivity impact, and ensure every engineer leverages AI as a force multiplier.
  • Foster excellence: Establish a strong engineering culture grounded in high-quality execution, continuous learning, and rapid innovation.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner with Product, DevOps, Infrastructure, QA, and Customer Experience to align engineering execution with company strategy and customer needs. Resolve organizational challenges and foster collaboration across teams with empathy and clarity.
  • Manage large-scale initiatives: Define milestones, assess project risk, and lead cross-functional teams through complex, multi-sprint initiatives.
  • Shape architecture & strategy: Drive engineering-wide initiatives focused on innovation, customer impact, and long-term scalability, and drive architectural integrity in partnership with the team architects.
  • Be a voice for Engineering: Represent the engineering organization in leadership discussions and occasionally in direct conversations with customers.
  • Contribute technically: Participate in code, system, and architecture reviews; guide teams in maintaining high standards of technical excellence.
  • Define success: Define and own engineering OKRs for your teams. Track platform performance, delivery health, and team effectiveness.

    What you bring to the team

    • A degree in computer science/engineering is required
    • 8+ years of experience in the software industry, of which at least 5 years should have been as an individual contributor doing full-stack development
    • 3+ years building and managing distributed engineering teams (onshore and offshore)
    • 3+ years of deep experience with Ruby on Rails application architecture and best practices 
    • Experience managing teams working on complex enterprise SaaS products
    • Proven experience driving AI-first development and leveraging AI tools yourself and within the team
    • Strong knowledge of the following technologies: the AWS stack, Elasticsearch, Unix-based systems, Redis, and NodeJS/Python
    • Proficiency with SQL databases, including data modeling, query optimization, and transaction management
    • Expertise in working with cloud systems, specifically for application hosting, file storage, and other related concerns.
    • Experience measuring and improving engineering metrics like DORA and SPACE
    • Experience with process improvement methodologies (ex: Lean Six Sigma) and automation
    • Nice-to have: experience with Java/Scala, Play Framework and non-RDBMS databases

    Salary

    Fluxx is committed to fair, transparent, and equitable compensation practices. We use a market-based approach to pay that reflects the cost of labor in different geographic regions, as well as our company size and industry standards.

    This role is categorized into three compensation tiers based on location, with the following expected annual on-target earnings (base salary + commission):

    Fluxx is currently seeking candidates located in Zone 2 and Zone 3 geographies for this role.

    • Zone 1 – San Francisco Bay Area, New York City
        We are not currently hiring for Zone 1 locations.
    • Zone 2 –  Boston, Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Washington D.C.
      $200,000 - $215,000k
    • Zone 3 – All other U.S. locations
      $195,000 - $200,000k

    The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on, but not limited to (a) location; (b) individual candidate skills and qualifications; and (c) individual candidate experience. 

    Fluxx is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. We take a market-based approach to pay which may vary depending on your location. Locations are categorized into one of three zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic location and our compensation philosophy.
