BBS is a year-round Montessori micro-school serving children ages 1–11 across multiple campuses, with current enrollment of 35–40 students and plans for continued growth. The school is organized into Toddler, Primary, and Elementary programs, with a Middle School division on the horizon. Based in Palo Alto, BBS is grounded in authentic Montessori pedagogy and emphasizes professionalism, kindness, and a commitment to excellence. All team members are expected to operate with discretion, collaborate openly, and contribute to a warm, focused, and joyful learning environment.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Campus Caretaker plays a vital role in ensuring that the school campus is clean, safe, well-maintained, and ready for children, families, and staff each day. This individual is responsible for daily custodial duties, light maintenance and repair work, support during events, and collaboration with external vendors and facilities specialists. The ideal candidate has excellent time management skills, sound judgment, and a proactive mindset, with the ability to work independently in a warm, child-centered environment.

 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Daily Campus Care

  • Maintain cleanliness of all indoor and outdoor spaces including classrooms, restrooms, kitchen areas, hallways, and outdoor play areas
  • Perform regular custodial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, restocking supplies, trash removal, and sanitization
  • Support arrival and dismissal by ensuring campus spaces are clean, safe, and visually welcoming

Child-Centered Collaboration

  • Model care, responsibility, and stewardship of the physical environment in ways that align with Montessori values
  • Greet children warmly and interact positively while performing duties around campus
  • When appropriate and in coordination with teachers, involve children in simple tasks that support their independence and respect for their environment (e.g., delivering compost, helping care for plants, observing repairs)

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Conduct light maintenance including changing light bulbs, basic plumbing fixes, paint touch-ups, appliance upkeep, and minor furniture repairs
  • Monitor and troubleshoot systems including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical, escalating to the Director of Operations or external vendors as needed
  • Document and track maintenance concerns and repairs; help identify opportunities for preventative maintenance

Project & Event Support

  • Assist with setup and breakdown of school events (e.g., chairs, umbrellas, cleaning)
  • Help implement minor facility upgrades or layout changes, including assembling furniture and moving classroom items
  • Support safety and emergency preparedness routines (e.g., exit signage, fire extinguishers)

Vendor & Facilities Liaison

  • Coordinate with third-party vendors or contractors under the direction of the Director of Operations
  • Track deliveries, materials, and maintenance supply inventory; assist in purchasing or restocking as directed

Other Duties

  • Participate in ongoing facilities planning and logistics
  • Support waste and recycling protocols and monitor city pick-up schedules
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure smooth day-to-day school operations

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • 3+ years in custodial, facilities, or maintenance work; school or childcare setting preferred
  • Working knowledge of building systems (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, electrical, safety codes)
  • Comfortable with hand tools and small power tools
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds, bend, stoop, and work on ladders
  • Trustworthiness, discretion, and respect for confidentiality
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Basic computer skills (for maintenance tracking, email updates, vendor communication)

Preferred

  • Experience supervising or liaising with maintenance vendors
  • Familiarity with school safety standards and child-appropriate cleaning procedures

Salary Range

$95,000 - $110,000 USD
