Professional Development Manager

Foley Hoag seeks a Professional Development (PD) Manager to drive a culture of continuous learning and excellence in collaboration with the Director of Professional Development, the Professional Development team, legal department and practice group leaders, partner mentors, and business services colleagues. The PD Manager will be involved in all facets of attorney PD, including career development, training, mentoring, and evaluations and feedback to support the professional development and career success of Foley Hoag attorneys at all levels.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Director of Professional Development and the PD team to assess training needs, create programs, and implement attorney core skills curriculum; manage external training vendors and content; research and propose innovative approaches to attorney training.
  • Collaborate with department and practice group leaders to identify and address attorney development needs; recommend best practices and resources; support the design and implementation of department training curricula; create or expand experience benchmarks; support CLE accreditation for department and practice group training in collaboration with CLE Coordinator as needed.
  • Provide confidential coaching and advising for associates on career development and strategies for success; work with associates on individual career development and training plans in alignment with their increasing tenure.
  • Oversee designated department mentoring programs; facilitate mentor-mentee pairings; recommend and implement new mentoring approaches, program enhancements, discussion topics, resources, and training.
  • Manage attorney feedback and review processes; read mid-year and annual reviews to assess substantive feedback and provide guidance; track attorney strengths and skill gaps to drive PD follow-up and planning; reinforce real-time feedback practices; provide coaching and training on feedback messaging and delivery.
  • Collaborate with other Business Services teams, including Business Development, Legal Recruiting, and DE&I, on initiatives for attorney development, advancement, and engagement.
  • Monitor external trends and best practices in attorney professional development, including attorney career paths, staffing, mentoring, feedback, and training; contribute to development and implementation of best practices at Foley Hoag.
  • Contribute to other PD initiatives and programs as requested or required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional development/training experience within the legal industry or professional services firm.
  • Innovative thinker; creative problem solver; excellent interpersonal, team, and verbal and written communications skills; works effectively and collaboratively at all levels.
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects at once, realign priorities as needed, and drive projects to successful completion.
  • BA/BS required.
  • JD preferred or MS in Education, Organizational Development, or related field.
  • Willingness/ability to work outside of standard business hours as needed.
  • Willingness/ability to travel to other office locations.

Compensation range is $128,000 to $176,000 commensurate with related experience and qualification. The salary of the candidate selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, specialty, and training. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the firm's reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
