Position Summary:
The Director of Psycho-Oncology provides executive-level leadership for the development, oversight, and growth of a behavioral health program dedicated to supporting oncology patients, caregivers, and medical providers. This role is responsible for building and scaling the psycho-oncology service line, including clinical programming, team leadership, service delivery, and community partnership development. The Director is a subject matter expert in psycho-oncology and is charged with designing and implementing innovative, evidence-based services through both in-person and telehealth platforms. This position includes a key focus on increasing program census and impact through relationship building with oncology practices, hospitals, and community partners. The Director will oversee a multidisciplinary team that includes both full-time employees and 1099 contractors.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Development and Strategic Growth
- Lead the creation, implementation, and ongoing refinement of the psycho-oncology behavioral health program.
- Develop scalable, integrated service models that combine individual therapy, group therapy, family support, and care coordination.
- Build and expand psycho-oncology groups tailored to specific populations (e.g., patients in active treatment, survivors, caregivers).
- Identify opportunities to grow program census through external partnerships, referral pathways, and market analysis.
- Represent the organization with oncology centers, health systems, and advocacy organizations to foster collaboration and referral relationships.
Clinical Oversight and Direct Care
- Ensure the consistent use of evidence-based practices (e.g., CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care) tailored to the oncology population.
- Provide high-level clinical leadership through case consultation, quality reviews, and direct client care.
- Oversee timely access to services, with a standard of 24–48 hours for new client referrals.
- Lead and participate in clinical quality assurance initiatives, ensuring exceptional client outcomes and satisfaction.
Team Leadership and Supervision
- Manage and support a multidisciplinary team of licensed mental health professionals, including full-time staff and 1099 clinicians.
- Provide clinical supervision, mentorship, and performance management in alignment with licensure and organizational standards.
- Foster a high-performing, collaborative, and mission-driven team culture.
- Monitor licensure, continuing education, and cross-licensing needs across multiple states, supporting staff and self in obtaining additional licenses as required.
Training and Curriculum Development
- Develop internal training content focused on psycho-oncology best practices and clinical competencies.
- Support ongoing staff development through workshops, case presentations, and continuing education initiatives.
- Collaborate with the broader clinical leadership team to embed psycho-oncology content into organization-wide training efforts.
Operations and Compliance
- Oversee daily clinical operations, ensuring effective workflows, documentation, and coordination of care.
- Establish and maintain policies and procedures in accordance with licensing, accreditation (e.g., Joint Commission), and payer requirements.
- Monitor clinical metrics, team productivity, and compliance standards to ensure program success and sustainability.
Required Qualifications:
- Licensure as a mental health professional (e.g., Psychologist, LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or equivalent) in the state of employment.
- Willingness to obtain cross-licensure in additional states, as needed to support program operations and expansion.
- Extensive clinical experience in psycho-oncology, including direct care and clinical supervision.
- Demonstrated success in building or scaling behavioral health programs and increasing census through outreach and partnership.
- Advanced knowledge of evidence-based therapeutic modalities and integrative care approaches.
- Strong leadership, communication, and strategic planning skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctorate degree (PhD, PsyD, or DSW) in psychology, counseling, social work, or a related behavioral health discipline.
- Experience overseeing hybrid teams that include both salaried and contracted clinicians.
- Familiarity with telehealth service delivery and technology platforms.
- Experience working in or collaborating with oncology or hospital systems.
- Knowledge of Joint Commission standards and behavioral health compliance practices.
Work Environment:
This is a hybrid position involving both remote and in-person responsibilities. Travel to partner hospitals, oncology centers, and community sites may be required. Flexible hours, including occasional evenings, may be necessary to accommodate client or partner schedules.
