Summary of Functions

The Survey/Quality Engineer in Deep Foundations is responsible for overseeing and managing the technical aspects of deep foundation projects, ensuring precision and quality throughout the construction process. This role combines expertise in surveying, geotechnical analysis, and quality control to ensure the successful execution of foundation work according to project specifications and industry standards.

Key responsibilities include conducting detailed site surveys, managing geotechnical data, monitoring foundation installation, and ensuring compliance with design requirements and safety protocols. The Survey/Quality Engineer will collaborate closely with project managers, construction teams, and external stakeholders to identify and mitigate risks, troubleshoot issues, and verify the accuracy of foundation elements.

This position demands a high level of technical proficiency in surveying and quality assurance, as well as a thorough understanding of deep foundation techniques, such as driven piles, drilled shafts, and ground improvement methods. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of quality and safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform Project specific engineering support, including:
    • Preparing project submittals.
    • Maintaining project record documents.
    • Perform technical review of contract plans and specifications.
    • Provide oversight and documentation related to project quality control in accordance with the contract plans, specifications, and company policies and procedures.
    • Preparing daily construction reports and progress tracking.
    • Manage, interpret, and perform site surveying.
    • Assist with the management of subcontractors.
    • Assist with the procurement or rental of equipment and materials.
    • Assist Project Manager with project daily cost reporting and tracking.
  • Perform Office engineering support, including:
    • Assist in the development of project cost estimates, proposals, and material take-offs.
    • Perform technical analysis of the remediation methodologies of various previously remediated projects.
    • Perform other administrative or office duties as required or as assigned.
    • Travel to project sites as necessary for extended durations.
    • Adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Perform additional assignments and special projects as directed.

Experience/Education

  • BS, Civil Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent preferred but not mandatory.
  • 5 – 10 years of experience doing the following:
    • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D software.
    • Experience with Primavera P6 scheduling software.
    • Experience with Microsoft Project scheduling software.
    • Experience with USACE QCS System.
    • Experience with site surveying, both conventional and GPS.
    • Assisting with the development of cost estimates and proposals.
    • Prior experience with materials procurement and purchasing.
  • The following safety training is preferred, but not mandatory. Company will provide additional training, as necessary.
    • 40 Hour HAZWOPER training.
    • Competent Person Safety Training
    • 8-Hour Supervisory Training
    • 30-Hour OSHA Construction Safety Training
    • First Aid and CPR

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be able to thoroughly understand the scope of project through plans and project specifications.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction engineering technology, codes and standards, and an in-depth understanding of the interdependence and relationship between other functional units.
  • Strong organization, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent computer skills including knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Working knowledge of data collection, data analysis, evaluation, and scientific method.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; able to manage priorities and workflow.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
  • Above average oral and written communication skills, leadership skills, along with use of independent judgement and creativity applied to resolution of issues.
  • Highly proactive and responsive to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and advise project leadership on complex issues.
  • Good problem-solving skills/decision-making skills.

Physical Demands

The following physical activities or abilities are commonly, but not always, associated with the performance of this position.  The actual requirements of this position will vary.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with vendors, management, and other co-workers, both individually and in front of a group is important.
  • Regular use of the telephone and email for communication is also essential.
  • Sitting for extended period is common.
  • No heavy lifting is expected. Exertion of up to 25 pounds of force occasionally may be required.
  • Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computers, calculator, copiers, and fax machines.
  • Good reasoning ability and decision-making is important.
  • Able to understand and utilize management reports, memos, and other documents to conduct business.

Primarily an office position. Occasional site visits and field project visits may be required. Travel to offices and projects in various locations around the country as needed. The following physical activities or abilities are commonly, but not always, associated with site visits. 

  • Be able to stand or walk on a project site for extended durations.
  • When on project sites or if performing some types of work activity wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including, but not limited to, earplugs, protective eyewear, gloves, hard hat, steel toed work boots, and high visibility safety apparel.

Work Environment

The job is primarily performed indoors in a traditional office setting and occasionally outdoors at construction sites.

The following environmental/atmospheric working conditions are commonly, but not always, associated with the performance of this position. The actual working conditions will vary.

  • Job Site environment, including, but not limited to, machines, tools, heavy equipment, chemicals, solvents, dust and fumes.
  • Occasional exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  • Uneven ground.
