Staff Software Engineer

Canada

About the role:

Forter is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to lead the technical strategy and architecture of a unified onboarding platform that connects merchants to Forter’s products. Forter’s platform is critical in enabling merchants to integrate efficiently and realize value quickly through automation, smart tooling, and a modern developer experience.

The Onboarding Experience team builds a self-service integration platform that reduces complexity and friction for merchants. This includes guiding developers through required API calls, enabling data mapping from vendors like Stripe and Adyen, ingesting historical data in various formats and validating integrations through Forter’s Integration Center UI.

Sitting at the intersection of user experience, developer tools, and platform scale, our team designs solutions that remove ambiguity from complex integrations and create enjoyable, efficient experiences for external and internal teams. We work with a diverse technology stack and partner cross-functionally to make integration frictionless.

In this role, you’ll act as the technical focal point—setting the direction for the team and collaborating closely with Engineering, Product, and Go-To-Market stakeholders. You’ll own key architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and drive initiatives that significantly reduce the time and complexity of our onboarding process.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Architect and evolve a scalable onboarding platform that empowers merchants to self-integrate with Forter’s services
  • Drive the technical vision and long-term roadmap, ensuring the platform directly supports Forter’s strategic goals—accelerating revenue growth, reducing time-to-revenue, and simplifying revenue diversification
  • Lead initiatives to make Forter’s integration experience a strategic differentiator—simple, intuitive, and delightful, on par with best-in-class platforms
  • Lead the technical direction of the team, ensuring alignment with business goals and driving innovation in developer tooling, SDKs, data ingestion, and automation
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to engineers on the team, fostering growth and maintaining a high engineering bar
  • Collaborate with Product, Go-To-Market and other internal stakeholders to understand merchant needs and translate them into technical initiatives
  • Drive cross-team engineering initiatives and be a trusted partner to other teams in the org

What you’ll need:

  • 7+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, designing and building production systems at scale
  • Proven experience operating as a senior or staff engineer in product-facing teams, driving architecture, technical direction, and cross-functional initiatives
  • Proficiency in modern web technologies, including JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, and GraphQL, as well as backend technologies and data pipelines
  • Proven expertise in designing and maintaining scalable systems and developer-facing tools or platforms
  • Strong communication and leadership skills; comfortable working across engineering, product, and business stakeholders
  • Self-motivated and solutions-oriented, with a passion for developer experience and technical excellence

Would be cool if you have:

  • Experience building SDKs or integration frameworks
  • A track record of reducing complexity through automation and tooling
  • Background in high-scale, multi-tenant platform design
  • Experience working with eCommerce platforms and understanding merchant data flows
  • Exposure to payments infrastructure, especially providers like Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, or Worldpay
  • Experience improving developer experience through documentation, sandbox environments, or test harnesses
