POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Materials Science Intern will have the opportunity to learn about new and innovative cementitious and other materials, their mutual interactions, and product characterization.

The Materials Science Intern will assist with laboratory efforts to prepare and analyze reactive materials formulations. The role will include performing standard tests related to cement, mortar, and concrete materials as well as their precursors. This individual will also have the opportunity to learn more about the fundamentals of material science by using characterization techniques such as XRD/XRF/SEM/Calorimetry/PSD etc. 

This is an onsite position based at our San Jose office.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with daily preparation and analysis of cement-based materials
  • Plan and conduct experiments under the guidance of a staff scientist
  • Spearhead a summer intern project and give a final presentation to the company
  • Assist with operation of laboratory tests and analytical equipment
  • Maintain and update an inventory of consumables and chemicals in the laboratory
  • Conduct safety inspections
  • Comply with all safety/lean practices within the lab

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3+ years of study in Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering or a related field by the start of the internship
  • Strong STEM educational background
  • Hands-on experience with chemicals/safe chemical handling
  • Interest in material science and analytical chemistry
  • Willingness to work in a team
  • Eagerness to learn
  • A “can-do” attitude

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in cement-based materials, CO2 capture, or green tech is a plus
  • Prior internship experience or experience with startups is a plus
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques including: XRD, XRF, PSD, SEM, BET, Calorimeter etc.
  • Interested in a career in research and development

COMPENSATION:

The hourly range for this internship is $25.00 - $30.00.
