Legal Co-Op

The Flagship Legal team plays a strategic role in enabling this mission by supporting corporate, intellectual property, transactional, and operational matters across the Flagship enterprise and its portfolio companies.

THE ROLE

Flagship Pioneering is seeking a Legal Co-Op for a four-month engagement to work alongside our in-house legal team. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to gain exposure to the legal and operational aspects of a leading life sciences innovation company while contributing to AI-powered initiatives designed to improve our efficiency, productivity, and knowledge management. 

The co-op student will help identify, design, and implement AI-enhanced processes that optimize legal workflows across Corporate, Intellectual Property, Strategic Transactions, and Contracts practice areas. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • AI & Process Optimization 
    • Partner with attorneys and operations professionals to identify opportunities to apply AI tools to legal workflows, including contract management, document review, IP portfolio management, and transaction support. 
    • Develop and document AI-driven solutions that automate or streamline high-volume legal processes. 
    • Test and evaluate AI tools for accuracy, usability, and compliance with internal data governance and confidentiality standards. 
  • Legal Operations & Knowledge Management 
    • Support the development of standardized templates, playbooks, and process maps for recurring corporate, IP, and transactional work. 
    • Contribute to data organization and knowledge management efforts that enable the Legal Team to capture and reuse institutional knowledge. 
    • Lead process-mapping sessions to assess current workflows and recommend technology-enabled improvements. 
  • Substantive Legal Support 
    • Conduct legal and regulatory research relevant to life sciences, intellectual property, and corporate governance. 
    • Draft and review routine agreements, memoranda, and diligence materials under attorney supervision. 
    • Support special projects involving strategic collaborations, licensing transactions, and portfolio company operations. 

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required
    • Currently enrolled in law school with demonstrated interest in the intersection of law, science, and technology. 
    • Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills. 
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate in a fast-paced, cross-disciplinary environment. 
  • Preferred: 
    • Experience with Microsoft 365, document management systems, or legal technology platforms (e.g., Cobblestone, iManage, ChatGPT, etc.) is preferred. 

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

By the end of the co-op, you will: 

  • Gain firsthand experience with in-house legal practice at a leading life sciences innovation company. 
  • Understand how AI and automation can enhance legal operations in a complex, multi-entity ecosystem. 
  • Develop skills in process design, change management, and technology adoption within a legal function. 
  • Build a foundational understanding of the business and legal frameworks underpinning biotechnology innovation.

The salary range for this role is $20 - $35. Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience. Flagship Pioneering currently offers healthcare coverage, annual incentive program, retirement benefits and a broad range of other benefits.
