Biochemist R&D Co-Op

Cambridge, MA USA

Flagship Labs 110 Inc. (FL110) is a privately held, early-stage technology company developing a fully integrated, end-to-end platform to enable next generation proteomics.

Our platform integrates groundbreaking innovations in bioengineering, machine learning, and custom microelectronics to offer a level of precision and insight never before achieved. By empowering researchers to explore proteins in unprecedented detail, we are transforming the way biology is understood and applied.

FL110 is backed by Flagship Pioneering, which brings the courage, long-term vision, and resources needed to realize unreasonable results. At FL110, we are uniquely cross-functional and collaborative. We are actively reimagining the way teams work together and communicate. Therefore, we seek individuals with an inclusive mindset and a diversity of thought. Our teams thrive in unstructured and creative environments. All voices are heard because we know that experience comes in many forms, skills are transferable, and passion goes a long way.

If this sounds like an environment you’d love to work in, even if you only have some of the experience listed below, please apply.

Biochemist (R&D): Co-op Position

Role Overview

We are seeking a Biochemist (R&D) co-op to support the design, production, and experimental evaluation of both analyte and sensor proteins for a next-generation nanopore sensing platform. In this role, you will work with both membrane and soluble proteins and collaborate closely with scientists across protein engineering, biophysics, and data analysis as projects progress from early design through experimental validation.

This wet-lab role is ideal for an undergraduate- or master’s-level student in biochemistry, bioengineering, cell & molecular biology, or a related field who wants hands-on experience contributing to exploratory R&D in an interdisciplinary environment.

What You’ll Work On

  • Express and purify a diverse set of both membrane and soluble proteins using bacterial expression systems.
  • Optimize protein expression, purification, and handling protocols to support experimental throughput and data quality.
  • Design and test new protein variants and constructs informed by prior experimental results.
  • Perform biochemical characterization (e.g., purity, stability, activity) of proteins used in nanopore experiments.
  • Collaborate with experimental and computational teams to interpret results and guide future protein and nanopore designs.
  • Document experimental workflows and contribute to shared lab knowledge and best practices.

What We’re Looking For

Required

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or Master’s program in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience with bacterial protein expression and purification.
  • Comfort working in a wet-lab environment and troubleshooting experimental protocols.
  • Ability to carefully document experiments and communicate results to team.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with membrane protein expression or purification.
  • Experience working with nanopores.
  • Familiarity with cloning, construct design, or protein mutagenesis.
  • Exposure to biophysical or functional assays.
  • Interest in working at the interface of protein design and sensing technologies.

What You’ll Gain

  • Direct ownership of experimental work that informs platform and product development.
  • Experience working with challenging protein systems, including membrane proteins.
  • Exposure to interdisciplinary R&D spanning protein engineering, biophysics, and data analysis.
  • Mentorship from experienced scientists in an industry research environment.
  • A strong experimental portfolio applicable to graduate school or industry roles.

Why This Role Is Different

You will be embedded directly within the scientific team rather than siloed into a narrow support role. You’ll work side-by-side with researchers at all levels, gain visibility into how experiments are planned and decisions are made, and see how early-stage ideas turn into real data and designs. Because the team is small and hands-on, your work will matter, your questions will be welcomed, and you’ll gain broad exposure to how wet-lab science operates in an early-stage biotech environment—far beyond what’s typical for a co-op role.

The salary range for this role is $25 - $35. Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience. FL110 currently offers healthcare coverage, annual incentive program, retirement benefits and a broad range of other benefits. Compensation and benefits information is based on FL110's good faith estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future.
