AI Research Intern 2025

San Francisco, CA

2025 AI Research Intern

FutureHouse is a nonprofit AI-for-science research lab in San Francisco. Our mission is to build AI systems that can scale scientific research and accelerate the pace of discovery, so humanity can proceed as quickly as possible to find cures for disease, solutions for climate change, and other species-accelerating technologies. At Future House, we're not just envisioning the future; we're building it.

We are looking for exceptional AI Research Interns interested in conducting cutting edge research in a fast-paced start-up environment to drive forward our mission of building an AI Scientist. You could be at any career stage, from undergraduate to post-doctorate level. We care more about your potential than your age/career stage.

We prefer for interns to join for at least 10-12 weeks. This role is based in our San Francisco, CA office.

As an AI Research Intern at FutureHouse, you will work alongside our AI researchers and software engineers on a high-impact research project. The majority of our internship projects will be led by your areas of interest, but will likely focus on validating new ideas and developing novel methods to enable AI to perform complex scientific tasks.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and optimize data pipelines for large language model (LLM) training, experimentation, and deployment.
  • Develop and fine-tune models for scientific research applications in biology and other disciplines.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of biologists, AI researchers, and engineers to create scalable solutions for complex scientific problems.
  • Contribute to the research and publication of innovative AI methodologies and applications in science.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently at least enrolled in a relevant undergraduate or graduate program in the sciences/CS/AI
  • Strong interest and coursework in AI, machine learning, biology, or related fields.
  • Ability to collaborate with your intern mentor to determine project/research scope, direction, and deliverables
  • Willingness to learn and collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Enthusiasm for our mission to develop an AI scientist and a vision for the potential of AI systems in scientific reasoning.

Nice to have:

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a Masters or PhD degree in Computer Science or related engineering fields.
  • Intent to return to a degree-program after the completion of the internship.

Our culture

  • Everyone who works here is insanely smart, but low ego. We are a small team achieving great things — and we want to achieve even greater things in the future. We keep standards high and work on the most important problem we can be working on. Sometimes that means learning new things and working outside of your wheelhouse.
  • We are working on problems that are way more interesting than what you'll find anywhere else. Why sell ads or optimize buttons when you can solve science and make breakthrough discoveries in basic research and make and test hypothesis humans haven’t previously thought of?
  • We have a tight-knit and collaborative research culture. We really value autonomy and being able to drive forward your own projects with the support of resources and collaborators, minus the bureaucracy.
  • We have a “20% projects principle” where staff are encouraged to spend 20% of their time working on a passion project (so long as they’re using FutureHouse tools to do so)
  • We aim to publish our work where possible.
  • We are fiercely committed to a flat structure, team science, and individual contributions: we believe that the way to enable discoveries is to enable small, integrated teams of outstanding biologists and AI researchers to iterate rapidly towards ‘big-if-true’ ideas
  • We work to flexibly hire the best talent in the world and to enable that talent to pursue their best ideas.

Role details and benefits

  • Time zones and location: This role is based in our San Francisco, CA office.
  • Compensation: The base compensation for this role is $100K - $120K
  • We are happy to sponsor U.S. work authorization if necessary.
  • Benefits
    • Enjoy access to comprehensive healthcare benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage during your internship
    • 401(k) match
    • Flexible time off
    • Daily lunches at the office
    • A very cool office and events space (can be used for happy hours and movie night)
