Market Context
Japan represents a compelling and rapidly evolving opportunity for General Atlantic. Following the firm's first growth equity investment in Japan, a strategic minority stake in SmartHR, the country's leading HR technology platform, General Atlantic is building a dedicated local presence to deepen its engagement with Japan's dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Position Summary
We are seeking a Vice President to join our Tokyo-based investment team. As a key member of General Atlantic's Asia platform, the Vice President will play a central role in establishing and growing the firm's presence in Japan — leading investment processes end-to-end, shaping investment theses, and managing investments in high-growth Japanese companies.
This is a rare opportunity to be a foundational member of GA's Japan Growth Equity franchise, owning key portfolio relationships while partnering with regional offices across Asia, including Singapore, Hong Kong, and Mumbai, to pursue cross-border opportunities and help high-growth Japanese companies scale and create long-term value.
We would also consider a Senior Associate level hire assuming that person demonstrated the capability to grow into a VP role in the short term.
Responsibilities
- Deal Sourcing & Thematic Development
- Proactively identify and evaluate investment opportunities in Japan’s growth company ecosystem through market mapping, research, and relationship building.
- Develop and refine investment themes aligned with GA's global sector strategies, with a focus on Japan-specific opportunities in technology, consumer, financial services, and fast growing asset-lite business services
- Build strong networks with entrepreneurs, advisors, bankers, and industry leaders.
- Portfolio Management & Value Creation:
- Serve as a primary relationship owner for GA's Japan portfolio companies, working closely with management teams to drive operational improvements, strategic initiatives, and long-term value creation.
- Monitor financial and operational performance, identify value creation levers, and support strategic initiatives (e.g., M&A, market expansion, organizational buildout).
- Contribute to exit strategy planning and execution.
- Deal Execution & Diligence:
- Lead and manage complex transaction processes, including diligence, valuation, structuring, negotiations, and closing.
- Direct Associates and Analysts from broader SE Asia team in analyses, modeling, and materials development; ensure high-quality output under tight timelines.
- Coordinate third-party advisors, experts, legal counsel, and internal cross-functional teams.
- Prepare and present investment memos for internal Investment Committee discussions.
- GA Team Development:
- The VP would work closely with and be supported by GA’s global teams in Singapore and the Enterprise Technology teams (as well as other sector teams where needed).
- Mentor and coach junior team members, providing guidance to foster professional growth and development.
- Contribute to a collaborative and high-performing culture within the firm, promoting teamwork, intellectual rigor, and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from a top-tier university
- 6+ years of finance experience, with ideally more than 3 years on the buy-side.
- Priority for backgrounds from major PE investment firms in Japan, with flexibility for venture backgrounds by exception, or investment banking, or a combination of finance and corporate roles with strong financial foundational training in their CV
- Ideally a proven track record of executing successful private equity or growth transactions from sourcing to closing
- Experience investing in or advising Japanese companies strongly preferred; familiarity with Japan's regulatory, M&A, and capital markets landscape is a plus. Flexibility for Japanese diaspora with high quality CVs seeking to return to Japan
- Deep passion for Japan's entrepreneurial ecosystem and a genuine conviction in the long-term opportunity in the market
- Exceptional financial modeling, valuation, and due diligence skills
- Fluent written and verbal communication skills in Japanese and English — bilingual fluency is required
- Demonstrable relationship developing qualities which would allow the VP to build a network within Japan's startup, venture capital, and institutional investor community
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with a high degree of ownership
