About the role:

We’re looking for an Engineering Director, Data Ecosystem to build and operate our first-generation data platform to power the company’s long-term data strategy. This role reports to the Chief Technology Officer.

Where you will work:

This is a hybrid role and will require 3 days most weeks in Garner’s New York City office.

What you will do:

  • Own and drive the execution of relevant quarterly deliverables and long-term strategy.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to align strategies and achieve company objectives.
  • Lead the development of a world-class data platform that supports data science, analytics, product, and engineering needs across the company.
  • Influence the collective technical designs and roadmaps of all shared engineering systems that ingest, move, process, store, or govern analytical data.
  • Influence relevant product and engineering roadmaps to ensure all data systems interoperate with a unified data ecosystem and oversee seamless migrations as necessary.
  • Oversee the Data Management sub-team and its manager responsible for building and operating the most critical shared data pipelines across the company.
  • Champion and ensure the privacy and security of our users’ data.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to your teams, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Mentor, grow, and recruit Garner’s next generation of engineering leaders.

What you will bring to the team:

  • 7+ years of experience working in the software engineering industry.
  • 4+ years of experience managing software or data engineering teams.
  • 2+ years of experience managing managers of engineering teams.
  • 2+ years of experience building big data systems handling at-scale data ingestion, processing, and/or storage.
  • 2+ years of experience working with data governance practices.
  • ​​Direct prior experience delivering major data platform components of a data platform from inception to production.
  • Expertise with big data technologies such as Argo, Apache Iceberg, AWS Glue, Spark, Metaflow, DBT, and Soda.
  • Strong technical understanding of distributed systems architecture and best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex business requirements into a well-executed technical roadmap.
  • Experience building data science platforms, machine learning infrastructure, or data governance systems.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP).
  • Experience managing regulated data is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with healthcare data standards (e.g., HIPAA, EDI) is highly desirable.
  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with a proven ability to inspire and lead a high-performing team.
  • A willingness to “roll up your sleeves” and do whatever is necessary to ensure company success
  • Experience working in a rapidly evolving startup environment 
  • A desire to be a part of our mission to improve the U.S. healthcare system

Compensation Transparency:

The target salary range for this position is $250,000 - $270,000 plus bonus. Individual compensation for this role will depend on various factors, including qualifications, skills, and applicable laws. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible to participate in our equity incentive and competitive benefits plans, including but not limited to: flexible PTO, Medical/Dental/Vision plan options, 401(k), Teladoc Health and more.
