CMM Inspector

Los Angeles, CA

About the Company

General Matter is enriching uranium in America.

Our goal is to design, build, and operate the world’s lowest-cost enrichment services in the United States.

Our mission is to restore America’s ability to produce nuclear fuel—fuel that will power AI, advanced manufacturing, critical industries, and the next generation of nuclear reactors.

Ultimately, our work will help power national ambitions and enable a high-energy society.

We were incubated by Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by top-tier investors. Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.

Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.

About This Role

As a CMM Inspector on the Manufacturing team, you will own the dimensional inspection and qualification of tubes, weldments, and machined parts — running portable-arm and fixed CMM measurement, tactile probing and laser scanning, fixturing, and the first article inspection that qualifies every part against drawing. You'll be trusted to take parts from incoming inspection through qualification and own the outcome: accurate, repeatable, and on time. You will play a critical role in scaling General Matter's production capability as the company works to build a domestic supply of enriched uranium and secure America's energy future. The ideal candidate is hands-on, thrives in fast-paced environments, and takes pride in flawless execution.

Responsibilities

  • Perform dimensional inspection of tubes, weldments, and machined parts, selecting the appropriate measurement approach — portable-arm or fixed CMM, tactile probing or scanning — for each feature.
  • Read and interpret GD&T — datums, profile, position, cylindricity, and flatness — directly from engineering drawings.
  • Build and maintain reusable inspection programs and methods to scale throughput and drive repeatable results.
  • Design and set up repeatable fixtures for tubes and weldments, and manage part temperature (e.g., letting aluminum reach thermal equilibrium) before measuring.
  • Perform First Article Inspection and produce clear, audit-ready inspection records and documentation.
  • Write clear nonconformance reports (NCRs), support root-cause analysis, and feed issues back to production rather than simply rejecting parts.
  • Maintain equipment calibration and measurement integrity through routine verification and artifact checks.
  • Help stand up and shape the inspection function as the department grows — recommending equipment, methods, and standards, and building the processes that let inspection scale with production.

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in dimensional inspection, metrology, or a related quality engineering role.
  • Hands-on portable-arm experience (Hexagon Absolute Arm), not just fixed CMM, with sound operator technique for holding accuracy.
  • GD&T fluency— able to read datums, profile, position, and cylindricity from a real drawing.
  • Proficiency with CMM inspection software (PC-DMIS and/or PolyWorks), including both tactile probing and laser scanning.
  • Experience inspecting tubes, weldments, and machined parts — straightness, roundness, weld distortion, and flatness on sealing surfaces — and the fixture to measure them repeatably.
  • Associate degree, technical certificate, or equivalent experience in metrology, quality, or a related manufacturing discipline.
  • U.S. citizenship (required for export-controlled and national-security-systems work).

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Understanding of measurement uncertainty and Gage R&R — able to judge whether the arm can actually hold the required tolerance.
  • Experience measuring aluminum and other parts sensitive to thermal expansion, including letting parts reach temperature before measuring.
  • Experience in energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, aerospace, defense, nuclear, or other highly regulated industries.
  • Background in AS9100 and/or NQA-1 quality systems and First Article Inspection (AS9102).
  • Eligibility to handle export-controlled data.
  • Proficiency with inspection software including PC-DMIS and Verisurf.
  • Able to drive inspection equipment selection, and own the maintenance and calibration of that equipment.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.

Equal Opportunity Employer

The base pay range for this role is $38/hr - $55/hr.

Compensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, technical capabilities and internal equity.
