Summer 2027 Internship - Field Engineer

Paducah, Kentucky, United States

About the Company

General Matter is enriching uranium in America.

Our goal is to design, build, and operate the world’s lowest-cost enrichment services in the United States.

Our mission is to restore America’s ability to produce nuclear fuel—fuel that will power AI, advanced manufacturing, critical industries, and the next generation of nuclear reactors.

Ultimately, our work will help power national ambitions and enable a high-energy society.

We were incubated by Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by top-tier investors. Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.

Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.

About This Role

As a Summer Field Engineer Intern at General Matter, you'll be on the ground in Paducah during active construction of our flagship uranium enrichment facility. It's a first-of-a-kind plant being built on the site of the former Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, which helped fuel America for sixty years. You'll be the link between design and the field, helping turn drawings and specifications into installed work, catch problems before they cost the schedule, and build the record that shows the plant was built right.

Most construction interns are one of dozens on a job at a large contractor, with little ownership of real work. Here you'll sit on the owner's team for one project of national importance. You'll take on meaningful scopes of work and work directly alongside the superintendents, engineers, and quality team delivering it. You'll see how a nuclear facility comes together, and you'll help build it.

If you seek high impact and are excited by fast-paced, intense, Skunkworks-style projects, we encourage you to apply to join our team.

Responsibilities

Field Engineering & Constructability

  • Help interpret drawings, specifications, and shop drawings for craft and subcontractor crews, and flag constructability issues to engineering before they reach the field
  • Assist in drafting and tracking RFIs and submittals for assigned work packages from the first question through the engineering response and closure
  • Perform quantity takeoffs, track installed quantities and percent complete, and support field progress reporting to project controls and the master schedule
  • Help verify survey, layout, and as-built data for foundations, embeds, underground utilities, and structural steel
  • Support coordination of material deliveries, laydown, and equipment needs with superintendents and subcontractors to keep work fronts moving

Quality & Documentation

  • Support coordination of inspection and test plan hold points with Quality Control, and help verify that installed work meets drawings, specifications, and nuclear quality requirements
  • Maintain daily reports, progress photos, and field records that become part of the facility's permanent quality and turnover record
  • Support punch-list walks, as-built markups, and turnover package preparation for completed systems

Safety & Field Coordination

  • Help prepare Job Hazard Analyses and take part in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and field safety walks
  • Serve as a day-to-day field contact for subcontractor foremen on assigned tasks, raising issues early and closing them out quickly
  • Own a defined intern project over the summer, such as tracking a site utility system or a building's foundation work, and present your results to the project team

Basic Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Civil, Construction, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or Construction Management, with an expected graduation date after summer 2027
  • Evidence of exceptional ability (construction internships or co-ops, engineering competition teams, hands-on projects, completed builds, etc.)
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Ability to work outdoors on an active construction site in all weather conditions, including walking uneven terrain, climbing ladders and stairs, and wearing required PPE
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance and access authorization
  • Available for the full 12-week summer 2027 internship in Paducah, Kentucky

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Prior construction internship or co-op experience, especially on industrial, power generation, data center, semiconductor, or other mission-critical projects
  • EIT certification or a passing score on the FE exam
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
  • Familiarity with Procore, Bluebeam, AutoCAD/Civil 3D, or Primavera P6
  • Exposure to nuclear, DOE, or NQA-1 quality programs
  • Leadership on an engineering competition team (ASCE Concrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, Solar Decathlon, etc.) or in a student organization
  • Military service, trades experience, or other hands-on leadership experience
  • Bias toward action and comfort making decisions with incomplete information in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment
  • Interest in building a long-term career on a single flagship project rather than moving from job to job

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
