Genio Software Engineer Apprenticeship - 2026 âïž
Start your Engineering career with Genioâs Apprentice Program!
At Genio, weâre on a mission to make learning more human. We believe the best way to encourage learning is by creating opportunities for hands-on learning. Weâre partnering with Leeds City College to offer a fully funded position through the Employers Apprenticeship Levy Level 4 Software Development apprenticeship.
During the course of this apprenticeship, youâll be solving problems, shipping code, and learning from engineers who genuinely care about mentoring the next generation. Youâll get the chance to gain valuable experience with structured learning and receive a recognised qualification at the end.
đ„ Meet the team:
Technology at Genio is a cross-functional function made of Engineering, Product, Product Marketing, User Experience, Customer Experience and Data. This filters down to our product squads where we have at least one team member from each discipline working together to build the best product for our users and customers.
Youâll be working alongside our four stream-aligned squads; Buyer Admin & Distribute (known internally as BEAR), Note-taking (known internally as GOAT), Learning (known internally as Egg) or Buyer HE solution (known internally as Loch HESS).
Youâll be managed by one of the Engineering Line Managers;
Natasha (owner of dog Bailey), Bruce (a man with a large vocabulary), Charlene (owner of dog Spud), or Mark (Nomad policy champion, Genio Pride Organiser) who are either Engineering Managers, Software Engineers or Platform Engineers themselves.
Mala is our Head of Engineering, if youâd like to know more about joining Genio, you can hear about her onboarding here.
đȘ What youâll be doing:
- Delivering high-quality, testable code: With support, youâll contribute towards product development using clean and efficient code, debugging, troubleshooting, and executing unit tests, ensuring quality and maintainability of the software solutions.
- Solving technical problems and contributing to documentation: Investigating technical challenges, using documentation to find solutions, and contributing to improving the documentation itself.
- Collaborating effectively and continuously improving: Participating in code reviews, seeking feedback, and staying up-to-date with best practices and technologies. Whilst working collaboratively within a squad.
đĄWhat weâre looking for
Weâre not expecting you to know it all, at the end of the day thatâs the point of an apprenticeship! But weâd love to see:
- A passion for tech and an eagerness to learn more
- You can demonstrate an understanding of coding (self-taught or more formal is fine)
- An awareness of software technologies, although weâre not expecting any professional experience of these:
- HTML, CSS, JavaScript (we use TypeScript & React)
- Databases (SQL)
- Version control (Git)
- A collaborative mindset â someone who enjoys learning with and from others
- A curious, growth-oriented attitude
- Clear communication and openness to feedback
𧩠What makes you a great fit:
- You're early in your engineering journey; self-taught, or a student. To be eligible to apply, you must only know up to 30% of the course content - so if you have covered a large amount of knowledge already (e.g. you've completed a bootcamp or a degree), you won't be the right fit for us on this occasion.
- You have a basic understanding of how coding works.
- Youâve dabbled in programming in some way, this doesnât need to be formally but at least familiarity of a coding language.
- You're curious, eager to learn, and open to feedback.
- You enjoy solving problems and arenât afraid to ask questions.
- You can explain your thinking clearly, even if you're still learning.
đą Location:
We have a beautiful office space in Leeds and we love it when we get together to collaborate in person. We typically operate a hybrid way of working, which means you would work in the office about 2 days a week and remotely the rest of the time. In order to get the most out of this apprenticeship, please only apply if you are based within a commutable distance to Leeds.
We will discuss ways of working with you at interview however if you have any questions before you apply please reach out to recruitment@genio.co
đ°Salary:
Youâll be paid ÂŁ25,000 per annum for the duration of this apprenticeship, which will last for 27 months.
After successful completion of your apprenticeship, youâll receive your apprenticeship qualification; Level 4 in Software Engineering.
â° What the process looks like:
Hereâs an overview of what to expect, including deadlines for each stage of the application process. This helps us manage applications and ensure everyone receives feedback either way:
- Application - Interested? Itâs time to submit your application. You can expect a few questions relating to your academic information as well as questions to enable us to get to know you better. As part of the application process, weâll be checking your apprenticeship eligibility. We know AI tools are everywhere â but weâd love to hear your voice. The application questions arenât about perfect phrasing or technical jargon â theyâre here to help us get to know you.
Deadline for applications: Friday 3rd October 2025 at 4pm. All shortlisted candidates will be invited to the next stage once the deadline has passed.
- Video Assessment - If your application is successful, weâll invite you to submit a short video answering a few questions (which youâll receive in advance!). We would ask you to complete and submit your video submission within 7 days of receiving the invitation.
- Eligibility Check Screening Call - Your application will be reviewed by our learning partner who will check that youâre eligible for the apprenticeship via a short telephone call before we proceed with the application process. They will explore your right to work status, motivations for applying, and a few other details to ensure you meet the criteria for the programme.
- Technical Task - Next, youâll complete a small task that helps us understand how you approach real-world challenges. Donât worry itâs designed to be supportive - not scary!
- Final stage Interview / Assessment Centre - Weâll be bringing all shortlisted candidates together for a half day assessment centre in our Leeds office. This is for us to get a chance to know you better, and there will be a short interview with our Engineering Managers as part of the day.
Ahead of each stage, youâll receive a confirmation email outlining who youâll be meeting and when, anything youâll need to prepare in advance and any resources we think you might find helpful.
