Job Title: Senior Product Designer / Senior Strategic Product Manager (Life Science Reagents)

Position Type: Full-time, Strategic/Front-end Portfolio Management

Location: Piscataway, New Jersey

Compensation: The estimated salary range is $125,000 - $155,000 based upon experience level.

Job Scope:

At GenScript, we believe great products begin long before the first experiment. As a Senior Product Designer under GenScript's Catalog Products Business Unit, you won't simply manage existing products—you will design the future of our life science research portfolio.

This role sits at the intersection of science, technology, customer insight, and business strategy, helping define WHAT products GenScript should build over the next 3–5 years. Focused purely on front-end strategic planning, you will define the target specifications (What) while liberating R&D to explore the best execution (How).

You will work closely with R&D, Marketing, Business Development, Commercial, and executive leadership to discover unmet customer needs, identify emerging technology opportunities, design high-barrier product portfolios, and shape long-term innovation strategy.

Key Responsibilities (What You'll Do):

1) Design Future Product Portfolio & Roadmaps

  • Portfolio Strategy: Build long-term product portfolio strategies across antibodies, recombinant proteins, enzymes, bioassays, protein purification products, Cell & Gene Therapy (GCT) reagents, and emerging technology platforms.
  • White Space Identification: Pinpoint technology white spaces and unarticulated customer needs to establish a sustainable, high-margin product menu.
  • Strategic Roadmapping: Formulate and maintain future product roadmaps aligned with global business unit growth objectives.

2) Customer Insights & Actionable VOC

  • Deep Workflow Understanding: Transform scientific insights into commercial opportunities by deep-diving into customer workflows, Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD), and Voice of the Customer (VOC).
  • Market Intuition: Keep a pulse on emerging research trends, technology evolution, and the global competitive landscape. Your goal is to discover latent opportunities that customers have not yet articulated.

3) Shape Innovation & Platform Strategy

  • Multidimensional Evaluation: Evaluate future portfolio opportunities by integrating scientific feasibility, customer value, market potential, competitive differentiation, intellectual property (IP), and business economics.
  • Make vs. Buy Assessment: Conduct thorough "Build vs. Buy vs. Partner" assessments to support annual strategic planning and executive innovation reviews.

4) Connect Science with Business

  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Partner seamlessly with R&D, Marketing, Business Development, Commercial, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and QA/RA to transform raw ideas into high-impact product development programs.
  • Executive Communication: Develop data-driven strategic recommendations and business cases to guide executive investment decisions.

Education:

  • PhD preferred (Master’s degree with exceptional industry experience will also be highly considered) in:
    • Biology / Cell Biology
    • Immunology
    • Protein Engineering / Antibody Engineering
    • Biochemistry / Bioengineering or related life science disciplines.

Experience:

We are looking for an individual who seamlessly combines scientific depth with corporate strategic thinking. Preferred experience includes one or more of the following:

  • Protein engineering, Antibody discovery & optimization
  • Cell & Gene Therapy (GCT) reagent development
  • Functional proteins and Bioassays
  • Advanced protein purification technologies

Highly Desirable: Experience and service in Early Discovery, Platform Development, or CMC within biopharma or top-tier CROs.

A Strong Plus: Direct experience interacting with biopharma customers, supporting business development, technical marketing, or corporate strategic planning.

Core Competencies:

  • Strategic Thinking & Systems Thinking
  • Scientific Curiosity & Innovation Management
  • Customer-Centric Mindset (VOC/JTBD)
  • Portfolio Design & Market Insight
  • Cross-functional Leadership & Executive Communication
  • Data-driven Decision Making

What Makes You Successful:

You are someone who naturally enjoys asking questions such as:

  • Why do customers need this? What problem are we really solving?
  • Is this the best, highest-barrier product we could build?
  • What technology will define the next five years of drug discovery?

You possess the rare ability to synthesize Scientific Innovation, Customer Insight, Business Opportunity, and Technology Strategy into clear, decisive product definitions.

As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
