Geocgi is seeking an experienced GIS Developer to support the NATO International Staff (IS) Operations Division, Situation Centre (SITCEN), Geo & Space Services Section at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. This role will support the development, modernization, and maintenance of web-based GIS applications used to provide geospatial information in support of NATO senior decision-makers, intelligence analysts, task forces, exercises, and other mission-critical activities.

 

Working closely with the GIS Project Manager, the GIS Developer will design, develop, and deploy secure web GIS applications; integrate spatial data and services; develop geospatial processing and automation workflows; and support the performance and maintainability of NATO GIS applications. The ideal candidate brings strong web development experience using modern JavaScript frameworks, hands-on experience with the ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript or similar web mapping technologies, and proficiency with Python-based geospatial processing and automation. This position must be performed 100% onsite at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, configure, and maintain web-based GIS applications using the ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript and modern web development frameworks.
  • Implement and enhance web mapping functionality, including layer management, popups, custom widgets, and client-side spatial operations.
  • Integrate classified and unclassified spatial data and services into secure web-based GIS applications.
  • Integrate spatial data services through REST APIs and develop geospatial data models, layers, and map services.
  • Develop Python-based geoprocessing, automation, data conversion, preprocessing, and ETL workflows.
  • Build and maintain backend services and processing pipelines that expose geospatial functionality to web applications and enterprise systems.
  • Configure and manage map services, feature layers, and tiled datasets to support reliable and performant web delivery.
  • Perform performance tuning of backend queries, spatial services, and map rendering.
  • Maintain compliance with application security, usability, and accessibility requirements.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation for application code, service endpoints, workflows, and system architecture.
  • Provide technical knowledge transfer and application support to NATO personnel.
  • Collaborate with the GIS Project Manager and Geo & Space Services Section staff to troubleshoot issues, implement requirements, and support ongoing GIS initiatives.
  • Support additional GIS development projects and technical activities as directed by the Head of the Geo & Space Services Section.

As a candidate supporting NATO:

The following are requirements of the GIS Developer:

  • U.S. Citizen and Active U.S. Passport.
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance or Active NATO Secret Clearance
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Geography, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in web development using modern JavaScript and HTML technologies and frameworks such as React, Vue.js, or Angular.
  • Practical experience developing web mapping applications using the ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript or a comparable web mapping library or SDK.
  • Experience implementing web mapping functionality including layers, popups, custom widgets, and client-side spatial operations.
  • Proficiency with Python for geoprocessing, automation, ETL, and spatial analysis using technologies such as ArcPy, GeoPandas, Shapely, Rasterio, GDAL/OGR, or comparable libraries.
  • Experience integrating geospatial data and services through REST APIs.
  • Ability to develop and maintain backend services or processing pipelines that expose geospatial functionality.
  • Experience configuring and managing map services, feature layers, and tiled geospatial data.
  • Familiarity with Git or comparable version-control technologies.
  • Familiarity with Agile development and project management methodologies.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a technical team.
  • Advanced English language proficiency.
  • Beginner French language proficiency.

Ability to sign and comply with required Non-Disclosure Agreements. The following are preferred of the GIS Developer:

  • Experience developing GIS applications within ArcGIS Enterprise environments.
  • Experience supporting secure, classified, or mission-critical geospatial systems.
  • Experience optimizing web GIS applications, spatial queries, and map services for performance.
  • Experience supporting NATO, international organizations, defense organizations, or other government customers.
  • Experience developing technical documentation and providing knowledge transfer to GIS users and technical personnel.

 

The annual base salary range for this position is anticipated to be $93,000-$103,000 USD. The listed salary range represents our good faith estimate for this position. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. Geocgi considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s education & work experience, training & certifications, and key skills as well as market and business considerations at the time of the offer.
