What you'll do:
The Senior Field Hardware Engineer leads the field hardware response and pilot enablement programs for Geotab Video. This role owns the planning and execution of enterprise pilot support from pre-installation readiness through pilot close, provides advanced onsite troubleshooting for installation, power, calibration, mounting, connectivity, and camera hardware issues, and coordinates cross-functional programs that support the delivery of new AI behaviors. The role also plans and manages controlled field data-collection activities, including vehicle rental, equipment readiness, scenario design, testing, and delivery of high-quality training footage to the Vision team. As a senior technical contributor, this position establishes repeatable field processes, manages program risks and dependencies, mentors junior team members, and provides clear status reporting and recommendations to leadership
How you'll make an impact:
- Lead onsite investigation and resolution of complex Geotab Video hardware, installation, power, harness, calibration, mounting, connectivity, and SD-card issues.
- Own hardware readiness for enterprise pilots, including pre-installation reviews, vehicle and site assessments, installation planning, deployment support, troubleshooting, validation, and pilot closeout.
- Travel to customer and pilot locations to resolve issues within days, minimizing pilot disruption and supporting successful conversion from pilot to contract.
- Serve as the technical escalation point for junior technicians, customers, partners, installers, and internal teams during high-priority field issues.
- Review vehicle types, installation environments, wiring requirements, power sources, mounting locations, and connectivity conditions to determine safe and reliable installation approaches.
- Perform and validate camera and telematics installations, including harness routing, power connections, mounting, camera positioning, calibration, connectivity checks, and system commissioning.
- Develop practical diagnostic plans, identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and document permanent or preventative solutions for recurring issues.
- Partner with Computer Vision, Hardware, Product, Customer Success, Support, Sales, and Engineering teams to communicate field findings and coordinate resolution of technical issues.
- Support training-data generation for new AI behaviors by renting or accessing representative vehicles, installing camera kits, staging target scenarios, conducting controlled drives, and collecting video with known ground truth.
- Review collected footage and test results for completeness, quality, environmental coverage, and alignment with the Vision team’s requirements.
- Create clear installation guides, diagnostic procedures, test plans, field reports, pilot-readiness checklists, and training-data documentation.
- Maintain accurate records of hardware kits, tools, components, vehicle configurations, installation results, defects, and follow-up actions.
- Identify trends across customer deployments and recommend improvements to hardware design, installation processes, field tooling, training materials, and product requirements.
- Coach and support junior field technicians through hands-on guidance, knowledge sharing, field shadowing, and review of technical documentation.
- Support the creation of repeatable operating practices for a mobile Tiger Team, including deployment readiness, travel preparation, equipment management, safety procedures, and escalation paths.
- Follow all applicable workplace, vehicle, customer-site, data-handling, and health and safety requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you'll bring to the role:
- Bachelors in a related field. Equivalent combination of education and/or work experience in related field may be substituted.
- Post-secondary diploma, degree, or certificate in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, Automotive Technology, Automotive Engineering.
- Strong experience diagnosing and resolving vehicle hardware, electrical, installation, connectivity, or telematics issues in field environments.
- Working knowledge of vehicle electrical systems, power management, wiring, fuses, grounding, harnesses, connectors, and safe routing practices.
- Knowledge of vehicle-mounted cameras, telematics devices, GPS, cellular connectivity, SD cards, sensors, calibration procedures, and related diagnostic tools.
- Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, installation instructions, vehicle documentation, and technical specifications.
- Strong root-cause analysis and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to work effectively when information is incomplete or conditions are changing.
- Ability to plan and execute safe, repeatable installations across different vehicle types, customer sites, and operating environments.
- Ability to collect high-quality video and test data under controlled conditions and document scenarios, expected outcomes, and observed results.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex issues to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to prioritize multiple customer-impacting issues and make sound decisions under time pressure.
- Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining effective communication with remote team members and stakeholders.
- Ability to coach junior technicians and promote consistent installation, diagnostic, documentation, and safety practices.
- Experience with fleet management, telematics, connected vehicles, automotive technology, computer vision, or AI-enabled camera systems is an asset.
- Familiarity with tools such as Jira, MyGeotab, diagnostic applications, spreadsheets, and documentation platforms is an asset.
