
Finance Director
We are looking for a Finance Director to plan and direct all accounting and finance activities. This person will oversee the recording, tracking, and reporting of financial information in the general ledger, prepare reports for management, manage payroll, and develop and implement accounting controls, policies and procedures. In addition, the Director will manage client finance activities such as client profitability, utilization, billing, and production job management.
The Director reports to the VP, Finance and will directly manage, train and motivate the three accountants on the team. This role will closely partner with the other Finance department staff, the People team, as well as producers and account team members to manage their jobs / business.
Given the speed at which the agency moves and its growth trajectory, this role will serve as a point person across various internal stakeholders and partners. The ideal candidate must be able to multitask, think clearly on their feet and articulate key financial metrics to team members. But most of all, they are someone who is ready to become a Spoon - to give a damn, try anything, and enjoy the people they are working with.
This role will be working out of our NY office on Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Responsibilities
Oversee the daily activities of the accounting department
- Maintain general ledger and financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Manage period end close procedures, including preparing reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, deferrals, and other related analysis.
- Oversee and supervise accounting department staff responsible for billing, collections, payables, expenses, fixed assets, prepaids, media / production expense pass through activity (WIP and deferred revenue, expenses, accounts payable and receivables, billing.
- Oversight of banking activity including cash receipts, cash reconciliations, cash flow
- Process payroll and maintain salary reconciliations and forecast.
- Produce financial statements, and other financial reports.
- Partner with the VP in the development of forecasts and reporting and analysis of the variances between forecast and actuals.
- Partner with the VP in evaluating, establishing and implementing internal controls and guidelines for accounting transactions.
- Partner with the VP in researching accounting issues and compliance with new accounting standards as necessary to develop and implement accounting policies and procedures.
- Build and maintain relationships with various teams within the company.
- Create and maintain detailed schedules to support all aspects of work for internal and external (i.e. auditors) review, approval and future reference.
Oversee client accounting / finance
- Partner with project leads to manage billing, expense and alignment with approved client budgets.
- Reporting and analysis of client profitability, utilization, scope of work funding, and other ad hoc reporting.
- Responsible for job management: open / close, reporting, tie to WIP balance to GL, etc
- Revenue recognition and forecasting.
- Maintain various financial trackers and reports (budget trackers, AR, staff utilization, burn reports, WIP management, etc).
- Maintain organization of agency scopes of work and associated staff plans in tracking system and in network share drive.
- Create and issue client burn reporting showing hours incurred vs budget and alerting client management of potential overages.
Other
- Identify training needs and provide / develop training programs for staff.
- Partner to select, implement, and manage new systems: AP automation, client funding / resource management systems / etc
- Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in accounting and finance roles, with 2+ years as an Accounting Manager or with similar responsibilities. Previous advertising agency experience preferred.
- 4+ years of experience managing direct reports.
- Proven knowledge of bookkeeping, managing period end close, and GAAP accounting principles, practices, standards, laws and regulations.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting.
- Strong technology skills, including general ledger and payroll systems and managing multiple platforms integrating into a GL (i.e., expense systems, subledger systems).
- Experience with NetSuite general ledger preferred; Mediaocean a plus.
- Advanced level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel and related productivity software (i.e., word processing, presentation).
- Strong communication, organizational, and analytical abilities, including time and resource management.
- Strong management and supervisory skills; proven experience in growing and mentoring a team.
- Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and be resourceful, flexible and quick to adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Acute attention to detail.
The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $140,000 - $160,000. Salary is determined based on a wide range of factors, including relevant experience, knowledge, skills, job duties, and geographic location.
