Manager, Environmental Health & Safety

Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms.
General Learning Management System (LMS) responsibilities shall include creation, collocation, development, and migration of training materials, and oversight of respective training plans in both Qualio and Moodle.
Environmental Health & Safety team responsibilities shall include routine training for safe laboratory operations, regulatory compliance, and biorisk management strategies for all of Ginkgo Bioworks laboratories located within the United States.
Responsibilities

Ginkgo Bioworks Learning Management System (LMS) Manager
- Serve as Process Owner and System Administrator for Learning Modules in Qualio and Moodle
- Participate in survey, selection and onboarding of ancillary interactive training solution (Moodle)
- Maintain legacy HR, Compliance, and EHS training files for migration into Moodle
- Onboard organization and migrate existing trainings (HR, Compliance, EHS) and foster development of new training, where needed
- Create and transform existing files into SQORMs for Moodle where interactive training is required
- Partner with Qualio Champions to build Training Plans, per SOPGEN-562, Training Program (draft)
- Monitor Training across organization and assist with continuous improvements.
- Assist Qualio Champions with overseeing Document development and periodic reviews.
Cross-Functional Training & Mentorship
- Supports preparations for Audit Readiness, with particular focus on USDA APHIS, CDC, and Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC)
- Coordinates and leads various in-person, virtual, and web-based EHS-specific training offerings, including but not limited to:
- Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment
- Emergency preparedness and response
- Incident response and investigation
- Decontamination and laboratory waste management
- Provides clear & consistent communication on biosafety policies to scientific staff (e.g., hands-on training, managing EHS Slack channels)
- Assists Triumvirate Environmental (TEI) waste contractors with biological waste program
- Reviews and updates all relevant laboratory signage as needed (biosafety level, emergency contacts, etc)
EHS Program Management
- Manages, administers, and coordinates Ginkgo’s Safety Committee while broadly communicating with stakeholders regarding Safety Committee business, changes, developments, etc.
- Extrapolates trends and provides metrics on lagging EHS indicators
- Responsible for development and implementation of robust cross-functional laboratory inspection program
- Administration and oversight of laboratory inspections across all Ginkgo sites on a monthly basis
- Facilitates ongoing in-lab compliance verification process
- Creates and maintains ongoing reviews of any site-specific and/or program-specific EHS-related policies, manuals, and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Assists with various annual program evaluations and assessments to determine programmatic gaps
- Assists in day-to-day biosafety program management, including:
- EHS Jira ticket requests
- Biosafety and general EHS related questions, concerns, or issues raised by laboratory staff
Biosafety Program Management
- Supports execution of all aspects of biosafety program across Ginkgo facilities and assists in day-to-day biosafety operations
- Assists in managing all applicable biosafety permits (local, state, federal), including the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) and USDA APHIS
- Assists in Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Registrations, capturing IBC meetings, and interfacing with scientific staff with respect to new or existing registrations
- Supports and serves on Boston-area specific institutional biosafety committee including providing administrative oversight, preparing research registrations, facilitating risk assessments on new research, and interfacing with community members
- Provides backup coverage when needed to ensure continuity of services
Minimum Requirements
- Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience.
