Who We Are

Girl Effect is an international non-profit that builds media that girls want, trust and need. From chatbots to chat shows and TV dramas to tech, our content helps adolescent girls in Africa, and Asia make life choices and changes.

We create safe spaces for girls, sharing facts and answering questions about health, nutrition, education, and relationships, empowering girls with the skills to negotiate and redefine what they are told is possible “for a girl”.

Our reach is 50 million and counting. And we’re using technology to reach girls at scale so every girl can choose to be in control of her body, her health, her learning and her livelihood.

Because when a girl unlocks her power to make different choices that change her life, it inspires others to do so too. She starts a ripple effect that impacts her family, community, and country.

That’s the Girl Effect.

Girl Effect is implementing a Child Marriage Pilot Project in Migori County, with the aim of reducing the prevalence of child marriage. The project is being rolled out in Kuria West (Nyamagagana) and Nyatike (Macalda) sub-counties, areas where girls face high risk of marrying before the age of 18 due to social, cultural, and economic pressures. We will work with girls aged 10–17, alongside boys, parents, guardians, and community leaders. We will combine community-based and digital approaches to deliver impact. Community champions, schools, forum theatre, radio, comics, short videos, and digital platforms will be used to spark safe dialogue, highlight positive role models, and strengthen referral pathways for sexual reproductive health and child protection. Through these efforts, the project seeks to ensure girls remain in school while accessing health and protection services. Additionally, We will test how digital media and community-led conversations can reduce child marriage in Migori and to generate insights that can inform scale-up across other regions.
